For a scholarship, what is need ?

Several of the local scholarship applications list financial need as a factor. They ask for very basic information like adjusted gross and family size.

I understand the concept of financial need in terms of the FAFSA and EFC, but what exactly do these organization consider need ? Our family isnt poor, but I dont consider us rich. Should I stay clear of these scholarships or give them a shot ?

There’s only one way to find out, and since you know the particular scholarships that you’re looking at and we don’t, the job of finding out will have to fall on you.

Elks, Eagles, other fraternal organizations.

They dont post any kind of guidelines, just that need is a factor. Who should I ask ?

Each organization is going to have it’s own definition of need and for local scholarships it is probably within the context of the general income levels of the area where students are eligible. If you feel you are competitive for a particular scholarship in regards to other criteria(GPA/test scores/community service or whatever they may be), give it a shot weighing how much work the application is and how much the award is for. If you are competitive, local scholarships probably give you the best odds of getting an award, though they may be small. Every little bit can help.

[Let me google that for you](http://lmgtfy.com/?q=elks+scholarship+requirements)

MiddKidd, those are requirements for national scholarships while the OP is asking about local ones. Frequently local chapters/lodges of national organizations will have their own scholarships and the criteria/need definition won’t be the same.

Yes, the first search hit is for the Elks National Foundation, but that website provides obvious links to contact information for all the local lodges… names, addresses, emails, phone and fax numbers. Obviously, the point is… this contact information is not at all hard to find.

Years ago I received a local scholarship from the womens college club. I think it was because i was the neediest of the best students who applied.

Use your own judgment.
