For the love of God Please Help with College Advice

I came across college confidential when I was looking around for college information. I just have to say that you are all are genuises.
I wasn't sure if I should post this because everyone else on here seems to have a 4.0 and above but I did anyway because I'm in dire need of advice..

I'm semi-fluent in Deutsch from living here.
I consider myself half-European because I lived here since '02

I'm not sure what my state of residence is but its most likely NC because my family has a house there, although the majority of my family is scattered around Cali.

I'd really like to go to NC, CA, or WA

Am I in good standing or just decent?
can I get into UCSB<3, or UNC Ashville or UW?
If not these any other college?

is it true that having a mailbox allows you to have state residency?

If you've read till this point then you are a truly amazing person and should leave some postive or negative advice.
any suggestions for improvement?

thank you

UW: Who knows any more? They changed their admissions process last year and I don't think anyone knows what to look for yet. I would say you'd have a reasonable chance but I'm not sure. Make sure you write a good essay on how you are oppressed.

Any UC school would be between a short stretch and a long reach -- you are out-of-state and your grades are right on the cutoff. You might consider UC Riverside. It's heavily under-appreciated but does a really nice job with undergrad education, and has a fine political science program. Their students used to host a high school MUN conference every spring. I don't know if they still do.

The UCs definitely will NOT fall for the "my mailbox is my residence" ploy. Sorry. I don't know about UW.

I don't know from North Carolina. Sorry.

Good luck, and aren't you glad you are starting now instead of next November?

Do you plan on majoring in poly sci, international relations, or something else?

I think it's only a state of residency if you actually get your mail delivered there...

Your state of residency may be where your parents file their state taxes. Try the parents forum.

I strongly suggest that you read some basic info about applying to college. The U.S. News, Newsweek or Time guides that you can get on your newstand are good places to start.

You also can get info by Googling and finding some web sites with general guidance. I believe that the College Board website offers such info.

While you can get great info here, no one here is going to lead you by the hand and spoon feed you the basic info that you need.

Also, check the web sites of the public universities in the states that you're considering attending college in. You can find on those web sites what their rules are for qualifying for the state residents rate. You also can e-mail their admissions offices to find the info, which varies by state.

You're only considered in-state if you pay your full taxes to the state.
Since you live in Germany, this is HIGHLY unlikely.

I was in the same situation. I live in Switzerland, but I have an adress in California, and I have a CA driver's licence and everything. But no.

I've been told that military people can pretty much pick their state of residence. Many use Texas, because it offers them some nice advantages. A coworker did this. Ask your parents as soon as possible about your state of residence. Then, begin reading up on the state universities and colleges there. Also, most states have a scholarship program. Check into that. With your PSAT scores and grades, you will do fine. You are eligible for a lot of schools, and you are starting early on your search and planning. That is really great.

You might have a good chance if you increase your AP courses as planned. Get your GPA up a little. Your EC's are great and ROTC helps tremendously.
Good Luck!

Being in the military enables you to declare whichever state you want to be a resident of. Furthermore, while I was stationed in a ship, I didn't have to file for any state taxes. Being stationed in Norfolk, many of my shipmates declared themselves Virginia residents to take advantage of its outstanding higher public education system.

The military state-of-residence applies to the member of the military, I don't know if their dependents can choose different states. Have your parents check with your branch of the service, don't just take advice from people on this forum.

There is no single rule for all states. Washington doesn't have income taxes, for example, so this wouldn't apply. CHECK WITH THE COLLEGE to find out residency requirements. It's a lot more certain than listening to the CC forum folks.

Im going to figure out my state of residence...
My parents were registered voters in NC in like 1998 and we have a house there but I don't think we've paid any state taxes except for our house..
I want to major somewhere around history, political science/international relations/economics, environmental science or anthropolgy...
the military is also an option (If the OIF ever ends)

thanks for the advice it was very informative
