Specifically for NMFs. my major is economics
My DD is in her 3rd year there on the NMF scholarship. She will be graduating this year but is intending on staying to complete a fast track masters in cognitive science. It has been a great school for her. She has taken advantage of all the opportunities that they offer. She spent 6 weeks in Florence, Italy studying art using UTD’s stipend. She is first in line for class registration and housing which makes life so much easier. She has gotten 2 well paid internships - one in Dallas and one in Austin.
Socially, she is very active. I know last weekend, she went to 3 Halloween parties and to the ballet downtown using free tickets that UTD gave her. She is always busy doing something. We did give her an old car to take and that has been helpful. There is a lot of things to do in the Dallas area but it is helpful to have the transportation to get to them. The school does offer free metro passes but having a car again makes life easier.
UTD’s scholarship has given my DD opportunities and has opened her mind to possibilities. With the scholarship basically being a full ride, we can afford other things that would not have been possible at another school.
With a major in economics, you might be interested in the Bill Archer Fellowship Program. It is a semester internship in Washington. My DD has 2 friends that are doing that now. Again, UTD offers many opportunities.
Thank you! Do you know how the Economics program is= I know UTD is mainly known for CS and STEM in general?
Do you know how the economics program overall**
No, I really don’t. I know their business school is good but I really don’t know anything about the economics degree. If Also, what do you plan to do with an economics degree? If it is to apply to law school, I know they have programs that can help with that. I would either plan a visit or call the national merit office and talk to them about your plans and see what they say.
@GTAustin I’m not sure yet but I was thinking major/double majoring in Econ/math and going to graduate school for Economics. I’m also interested in the finance major. I don’t think I want to study law though.
I would think UTD’s math dept would be strong considering it is a STEM school. I also think the finance major is good, just not as well known as some. Again, I think you need to visit and/or talk to the national merit office. They can tell you about the opportunities in those fields.
You might want to look into UTD’s new undergrad Data Science program
@3scoutsmom Thank you!! I’ll check that out
