Switch Swarthmore and Wesleyan and I think you’ve got yourself a list!
@MACncheez It’s one place difference—why is everyone so caught up with the rankings?
Sorry, forgot my smiley face. I was kidding, except for the part where I said “you’ve got yourself a list”. That’s all it is.
These rankings have been out for a while haven’t they? I do not really agree with putting LACs and national universities together, but this list is not bad with some minor exceptions.
They came out in July, but Forbes keeps planting it on Facebook feeds as if it is new.
Argh, you’re right–sorry…I got suckered in by the clickbait!
Pomona loses much more of its cross-admits to universities than to other LACs. A high number of people who look at top LACs apply to top public and private universities. Their undergraduate residential experience- for instance, Harvard College vs. Williams College- are more comparable to each other than it would be to a university where the majority of students commute.
I don’t really agree with Forbes methodology, but one thing I do appreciate in putting both types of institutions together is that it gives at least the slightest bit more attention to liberal art colleges. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the page view count for US New’s Top Universities be much higher than the Top Liberal Art Colleges list.
Historically, LACs and universities appear to have been typically combined for consideration by national publications, as in this example from Life Magazine:
Note that, statistically, LACs (perhaps an anachronism) represent the majority of the uppermost colleges listed.
@merc81 , I don’t mean to hijack the thread (it may be, too late for that) but, that Look magazine article is a like a time capsule from the past - the tuition rates, the 100% yields, the parity between LACs and RUs are all intriguing. The system clearly blew up at some point. The question is when and why?
JHU at like 66 haha, this list more than just a little off
Someone has to be #66 @Flurite. Wear it loud, wear it proud!
@MACncheez I don’t go to JHU tho
@Flurite Oh, well thank goodness. They’re ‘just’ ranked #66!
As to the when, this may have corresponded with a cultural shift that occurred sometime between Small is Beautiful and Super Size Me.
