I was admitted to Fordham University and got the National Merit scholarship because I was a finalist this year. I know that the award includes tuition, but does anyone know the specifics related to study abroad (can I use it to pay tuition for a program)?
@Ismaerienne we are go to the admitted students day and I was planning to try to get the answer to that exact question there. I’ll let you know what I can find out.
Okay, thank you!
We were told in admitted students meeting that Fordham scholarships apply to Fordham programs and Fordham exchanges.
My daughter received the NMS full tuition scholarship for the class of 2020. Below is a sentence in the award letter…It “It is applicable to undergraduate tuition charges for courses taken at Fordham University only.” Does your award letter have a similar statement ?
@Fordhamdad2020 no, my son’s letter does not have that statement. It says it is dependent on making satisfactory academic progress and maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA.
@Fordhamdad2020 actually you are right. It didn’t say that in the acceptance email, but our paper letter does have that statement in it. We’ll definitely need to get clarification at the accepted students program this weekend as my son is taking International Studies and would like to study abroad a few times, if possible.
Review the Fordham Study Abroad pages. Specifically Scholarships and Financial aid. Still not clear if merit scholarships are portable. https://www.fordham.edu/info/20917/study_abroad
During lunch they had tables setup and staffed by different programs and clubs. I believe SA was one of the tables. Good luck.
I contacted the financial aid office and they said that the award would apply in full for programs that are offered by Fordham specifically or are exchange programs. If it is a partnership, the award only works on a limited basis. I’m planning on majoring in international studies as well, if I go to Fordham.
@Ismaerienne I was just at Fordham yesterday and went to the presentation regarding study abroad and asked this question specifically. What I was told by the head of the study abroad office is that the National Merit Scholarship (and any other fordham scholarships as well) transfer over in full for the three Fordham Admistered Study Abroad Programs (in London, Granada and Pretoria). The scholarships also transfer over in full for study with the roughly 20 programs that are Fordham Exchange program partners. The other programs during the school year are subject to some sort of mathematical calculation to determine how much of the scholarship can be used. Study abroad outside of the school year is available, but not covered by the scholarship (but neither are summer courses at Fordham). Here is a link to the page on the website that describes the programs available (each heading is an active link): https://www.fordham.edu/info/20919/programs
We were impressed and my son plans to commit to Fordham this week. Good luck to you!
Thanks for the confirmation.
We went to Fordham open house as well. Did you receive a schlorship there?? We like the campus and I am thinking anout attending there.
@aimster888 Thank you for the response! I am pretty sure that I will go to Fordham, and I am actually visiting this next weekend.
@Ismaerienne Enjoy your visit! My son really felt at home and like it was the place for him. Hopefully you’ll have that same sense of connection. It is a beautiful campus in a very exciting city. Good luck with your final decision. (The national merit scholarship was the icing on the cake!)
