Fordham vs. UC Davis

Hi guys I just got accepted by both Fordham University and UC Davis. I got in the Gabelli School of Business at Fordham(major in marketing) and school of social science at Davis(major in international relations). I’m having a hard time choosing between these two. Could you guys help me out?

Are you a California resident? Because both schools, to me, are very opposite from each other in terms of location. My daughter was interested in UC Davis when we went to a college fair, but a friend of mine (UCLA Alum and Cali native) had to explain to me how it is mainly an “agricultural school”.

You can’t go wrong with UC’s (wish we were California residents, because my daughter was accepted to UCSB and UCSD) and would have loved to have send her to one. But unless you have visited both schools to get a feel of what you like, and take financials into consideration, you really need to think this one through.

To me, I would opt for Fordham, especially since you got into Gabelli. You have the world at your feet with that. I don’t know what UCDavis offers with their school of SS, but I know with Gabelli you will have lots of internship opportunities.

See what the financials are like and work it out. Plus visit.

Good luck.

UC Davis started as an “agricultural” school (part of Berkeley), way back when, but has gotten way beyond that. Yes, they study agriculture, but they also have a Vet program and Vintner studies. The most difficult and hardest courses to get into are tractor driving and beer making (because of popularity). There are over 35K students there. I don’t think they are all studying agriculture.

My daughter graduated from there last year. She loved the campus and the community. The school is beautiful! It is a college town and there are more bikes than students.
There is a medical center and school, a school of engineering (with Silicon Valley not too far), social sciences, and humanities. Sacramento is 20 minutes east and Berkeley/San Francisco are easily accessible by train, which my daughter traveled often.

However, if you don’t reside in California, the OOS rate is very expensive. There is no financial aid for non-residents given that it is a public school. So, the rates would stay at $55K per year.

Congrats! You have two good choices! Visit if you can!
