Someone asked me today whether or not the academy requires two years of a foreign language for admissions. does it?

i think that it is on the “strongly recommended” list, but I don’t think that it is labeled as required for admission. Still, if your friend has time, it would still be worth his while to start with a foreign language (I personally think that Spanish will be the most useful in the U.S. in the future). I believe that the academy requires students to take chinese or arabic if they have not had previous experience with a foreign language.

That’s not true at all about the chinese and arabic. If you’re a group 3 major you’re required to take or validate two years of any lanuguage that’s offered. Group 2 and 1 majors don’t have to take one.

is it difficult to take a language if you’re a group 1 or 2 major?

its harder…

sorry didn’t mean to post misinformation

scubaguy…there’s always ‘rumors’ flying around USNA and my Youngster told me a few weeks back that one of the rumors was the USNA was going to require more language study from ALL mids for incoming classes. Don’t know whether there is a lick of truth to this or not…but there it is.

It may be harder but if you really want to study another Language it certainly is doable. My Mid is a Division II major and has taken a language starting in Youngster year. Plans to take his language through firstie year.

scubaguy -

for admission - here is your answer:

to make yourself competitive - yes - at least 2 years of a foreign language is suggested.

I wish the academy had Latin as an option. Heh.

Does 2 years of Latin in HS fulfill the language requirement?

That’s a good question. Don’t recall that being discussed here in the past 500 years or so.
Anyone know?

And on the rumor front … we were told by a reliable source, that the '11 Mids were going to be required to take languages. Turned out to be one more rumor.

The reality of these is that implementing them is not “free.” Either in outright cost or what would have to be traded. So … get used to the rumors. USNA seems to be a hotbed for their germination.
