Dear Members of the Dartmouth Community:

It has been customary for Dartmouth's president to issue a five-year report, as I did in 2003. It is now my pleasure to share with you a ten-year report available at: Forever New: A Ten Year Report, 1998-2008, by President James Wright, reflecting on what we have accomplished at Dartmouth during my tenure.
The progress and accomplishments highlighted here are, in many ways, the results of our collective efforts, the return on the investment in and by Dartmouth's greatest asset -- its people. Thanks to Dartmouth's distinguished faculty, outstanding students, committed staff, and supportive alumni/ae, parents and friends, the College has never been stronger.

As you know, because of the worldwide economic crisis, we are engaged in the challenge of significantly curtailing expenses to compensate for a decline in endowment income. In doing that, we are taking pains to protect the strength of our faculty and the overall educational experience of students, to maintain a full financial aid program that preserves access to Dartmouth regardless of a student's financial means, and to minimize the negative impact on our administrative and professional staff who so effectively support the Dartmouth experience.

Because of generous and wise stewardship by current and previous generations of the Dartmouth community, Dartmouth's substantial financial endowment has allowed us to advance and protect these priorities and the accomplishments described in this report. That endowment of financial resources, along with those of every other college and university in the country, is now strained, but our true endowment -- the people, facilities, and programs comprising the distinctive Dartmouth experience -- is thriving.

The beginning of this new year also ushers in my final few months as president. This assignment, while seldom tranquil, has provided more satisfaction and joy than I ever could have anticipated. But we are only halfway through this academic year; June is yet six months away. Because of the impact of the economy on the College, the nature of my assignment for these remaining months has shifted somewhat from what I envisioned in September. Be that as it may, I look forward to the months ahead with enthusiasm and gratitude for your good company and support for Dartmouth.

Sincerely,
James Wright

Thanks for posting this. While I am not an alumnus of D, I can see why it is so highly thought of.

I have an interview with Dartmouth this Wednesday. I so wish I got into the school. Yay for Dartmouth!
