Former Alum just curious...

I will be attending MUO in 05-06. I am out of state (NY) so i can understand how people are irked by tution costs, its expensive. I plan on majoring in Management but that is subject to change as I really havent made up my mind, whatever I do i will probably have a lot of minors :-P

Best Wishes etiscew! I hope you have the time of your life. I graduated with a BS in Business Management. Has served me well in many careers and business ventures. Even helped with "managing" my family household and volunteer activities. The business school is getting a new building I see. I am sure it will be state of the art. If you feel like it or remember, please PM me and let me know how you are enjoying it once you get started in the fall.

Bump-for those researching Miami this fall

Im from indiana, prospective pre-med(biochem) or chem. engineering major. Miami had been my first choice since freshman year, then i visited miami... long story short i hate miami and i went from planning on applying ED(I was so excited i completed my whole app and essay in july) to not applying at all. Miami is not worth the cost at all when compared to other higher ranked or just better overall midwest schools. You can apply to a private school like u of dayton or depauw and get a lot more money and a better school imo. Or if from ohio i think OU is a much better option

IMO, it would be more helpful to share specific examples of why Miami is not for you than to just slam the school and in general say it is "not worth it", but hey, its a free country.

Aren't you already going to Kent or OU next fall? I thought I read your glowing report on one of those schools on another thread. So, what are you doing just going around spewing poison about other schools?

I also see you posted a similar "Miami is not worth it" comment on another thread under the Miami heading. How about some details instead this hate speech?

lol.. im not 100% sure but im probably going to ou so i guess im kinda biased... The first thing that i noticed was i didnt really like the town of oxford. I like small towns but oxford just seemed a lot less welcoming for a college town. Second was the mindset of all the students that i met.. i actually had an advantage in that im from IN and i knew a few ppl who go to miami so i spent some weekends there. I thought there is no way that miami could be as bad as the stereotypes (which it wasnt, but it came close). I noticed that the school was great when it came to partying.. but outside of that it seemed that nobody had anything to say. Most of the ppl were basically clones of each other and while they werent mean or anything, you could definitely tell who they accepted and who they didnt. The Miami student body is a lot more close-minded than i would expect a college to be. I actually was still considering applying to miami after the visit until i visited more colleges (specifically ou where i went to a 2 week summer program and udayton) i was amazed at how open and friendly all the ppl were. I remember being in a store at ou and mentioning that i had nothing to do that night and the cashier actually invited me to a party. Basically miami is a hit or miss school either you are in love with it or you hate it.. I personally hated it

and no im not considering kent at all..

Did you know that Miami was ranked higher than IU-Bloomington?

With whom did you party? I am assuming you did not meet many honors students, all of whom are exceptionally intelligent and are, for the most part, well-rounded and aware of current events. Yes, there are stereotypes of Miami, and yes, those stereotypes ARE based on truth to an extent-- but obviously you didn't look for a niche, because there are all sorts of students at Miami. How about Western? What about Greek students? There are plenty of absolutely hilarious, down-to-earth Greeks, quite a contrast from the "airheads" that I keep hearing about.

Plus, Miami is one of the top 20 schools in the country for studying abroad. I could spend a semester/year in Luxembourg on Miami's campus for the same cost of tuition/room and board. There are many other study abroad programs as well. If there is one thing that could broaden one's mind, it's studying abroad. JMO.

aussiek517... yea i knew miami is ranked higher than IU but who wouldnt expect that? I dont even take rankings into account when i look at schools, imo you can get the same education at any of the schools ranked 50-120 (not taking into account specialties of course).... One of the guys i hung out with was a greek and the greeks were just the same as all the other greeks at all the other schools ive been. I can find good greeks anywhere and I plan on pledging myself. The honor kids everywhere are intelligent and well-rounded thats a big part of the reason that they are in honors and at any school you can find a variety of all types of ppl. But when choosing a college you shouldnt look for a small group, you should look at the university as a whole. Why would i make studying abroad a bigger part of my selection than the actual university. Jmo, but i would rather spend 4 yrs. at a great school than 3 yrs. in a school that i hate just so i can go overseas for a year.
