(Former) Senior Dishing Out AP Advice: Q&A

dont use review books -- most of them suck
read your textbook or use apcentral
i have 10 5's from this method =]

Human Geography is easy, too.

Gujugeek, I self studied AP Chem (while taking regular chem) and AP Euro. I'd say statistics is pretty selfstudyable. Taking 8 ap's in 1 year will be a *****, but it is doable, as other people on CC have shown.

So is econ easy to study for even if you hate History?

hey phantom what did u end up getting on ur english ap exam?
was it hard for you or pretty simple?
how did you prepare for the US history exam? are REA and PR the best books to get to review and practice the AP? how hard are the dbqs graded?
wrathofgod, do you have any advice on how to prepare for the ap spanish exam and could you tell how u prepare for it?
thanks

AP English Lang and Comp, AP English Literature were easy peasy--you can't really study for the English AP I don't think. Just BS really, just like the writing on the SAT, all BS...haha. As long as you make it worthy of 800 on the SAT or a 5 on the AP.

If you guys are aiming for Harvard and Yale, then yes study for your AP and SAT.

If you aren't, then studying isn't important and just go in there and do your best and you'll probably do well. You guys seem naturally inclined enough not to study.

AP US History- 5 There is an online website that a has a huge review sheet and period sheets, my friend and I reviewed for an hour every day for a week before the test. It was pretty easy, the questions are very easy. The essay was boring. Most stuff is common knowledge if you know current events, and watch new shows (Hardball with Chris Matthews: great review, especially for Nixon-Clinton)

What about for these classes:

AP calc BC (is the ARCO book now the Peterson's book?)
AP World His.

sr6622 - again, for BC, I didn't use a review book -- I did 4 old AP Part I's and roughly 15 old Part II's.

U.S. history - bebedrell, are u referring to <a href="http://www.apstudent.com?%5B/url%5D">www.apstudent.com?</a> That was a good site.

AP World His - didn't take it, but I've heard Barrons is good from a friend who's self-studying it (again tho, Barrons does tend to go a bit more in-depth)

hanna - I got a 4 on English. To be honest, I thought I was getting a 2 (I thought I'd be lucky to get a 3). I have NEVER screwed up SO badly before on an AP exam...I left out 8 m.c. and flat-out guessed on 12 of them (TOTALLY ran out of time for m.c. -- 5 mins left and 20 q's to go for me...there was a poem I had a lot of trouble with). When I did M.C. in class, I would usually only get at most 4 or 5 wrong...

My essays were horrendous! No conclusions on any one of them, only 2 body paragraphs for each...I had no thesis for one of them (thinking I could go back and write it later on). I ended up writing about 1984 for one of the essays...I read that 3 yrs ago, realized I forgot a lot of the specifics halfway through and couldn't go back, so I B.S.ed a lot of it. No clue how I emerged with a 4...so, if you are a better paced, and more structured writer than I am, you should be ok...

For english though, I still maintain that you really can't study. Just go in refreshed with a good night's sleep and hope for the best.

everyone should self study human geography, its pretty much common sense.

Does anyone know what textbook do teachers use in AP Comp. government? btw, is it necessary to buy a textbook if I want to do self-study???

Nope... I used <a href="http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm-%5B/url%5D">http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm-</a> great review has like a 100 little quizzes on the page, really helpful. Some of the question were exactly like the questions on the test like almost verbatim. It was scary. Review with that website.
I study with this site <a href="http://www.course-notes.org/%5B/url%5D">http://www.course-notes.org/</a>. The two together are a great combination.

Thanks for all the advice!! Hey, are there any really great sites that have old AP tests on them? Before I took Gov in the spring, I searched up and down for old practice tests, but all I could get were the ones in the backs of prep books, and the sample questions on collegeboard.com. (My teacher believed that it was wrong to study for the AP exam, that if you paid attention in class, that'd be enough. Maybe true for some classes, but not for hers!)

This Thread should be stickied

AP Bio-(4) Remember to study the labs!!! The ideas they illustrate can be really important to remember.

AP Psych- (4) Write during the whole essay period. Just write as much as you can, about anything you know. On the child development of language question this year I knew absolutely nothing, we had never studied it and I did no outside prep. I just wrote anything and everything, did not use any scientific terms and I guess it helped a little.

I completely agree! I read the whole PR book for US History the day before the AP exam(no joke).

[/quote]

haha I did the exact same thing! My teacher was horrible, too. PR is awesome, I ended up getting a 5 just from that one read through the night before.

For AP World I also highly recommend PR, because it makes the topics less boring and more relevant.

<a href="http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm-%5B/url%5D">http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm-</a>
this website doesn't work...
and there isn't comp. government in the other website.
but still...thinks!
again, can you guys post the ap comp. government textbook you've used ?? thinks!

cawaii -- try <a href="http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm</a></p>

Bump, some could really used this thread.

Oh, Boy, a great thread.

I have a couple questions (I've probably asked some of these in threads I started, but I always like to see others' opinion's.)

I'm thinking about self studying for AP Bio. Should I get both the griffin and cliffnotes or just the cliffnotes? I took regular Bio my freshman year (rising junior now) and while he was a coach, I still considered it a difficult class, especially 3rd 9 weeks where I had to do bonus to maintain my A. Also, when would you recommend me starting on the studying?

So I'm hearing AP geo is fairly easy as well. What would you (anyone can chime in, no one specific) recommend on self studying that?

Thanks for all the help in advance. I'm glad I discovered this site. :)
