Foundation Fellowship

I found out by regular mail, and I live in the Metro Atlanta area as well.

Got a letter from UGA today awarding me the Charter Scholarship, but no where in the letter did it mention the Foundation Fellowhship. Will I receive another letter tomorrow or Wednesday regarding FF finalist status?

I got the letter today too. I'm in Georgia.

I live way up in Wisconsin and I have yet to receive word as to acceptance or denial.

Meandmyboys and others who've attended the scholarship weekend:

Can you tell us, from your perspective, how the weekend was structured? Advice? Recommendations? Dos? Don'ts?

Thanks.

I didn't get the invite for FF. However, they did give me the Henry King Stanford $3,000 a year (renewable) scholarship, which makes UGA a very nice deal w/ the HOPE.

I'm waiting to find out about FF up in Massachusetts as well. Tomorrow...maybe?

I got a letter saying I was NOT a finalist. Kind of disappointing...ranked 3/460 at top 10 GA high school, 1560 out of 1600 SAT...other state schools are offering me full rides but not the one in my home state.

I'm not a finalist, either, but I did get the Henry King Stanford scholarship.

I'm disappointed but very happy at the same time.

mellohappy,

what do you think prevented your being a finalist? how are your ec's? Your scores are dangerously close to mind, so now i'm worried.

I'm not really sure...I have fine EC's if nothing outstanding....uncommon sport league champion team, captain of competitive marching band, scout award, music composition awards, essay awards, etc. Not much volunteer work though. I'm not sure how my teacher rec was...the teacher really likes me and I had the top grade in her class, but she is also honest...probably wouldn't check "best in career" for everything like some teachers might.
I think it really came down to the essays as long as you had certain cutoff scores. My essays were good but maybe didn't show enough uniqueness. I fortunately have not had many huge struggles in my life so I didn't have a sob story to talk about.

yay! i'm a finalist as well...i live in south GA and got the letter 2 days ago.

sob story? i definitely didn't have a sob story... :-P

Hmm, I also was not selected. Probably would have selected South Carolina if I had though (and if it came down to the two). GO C0CKS!

. . . Did joanna180 just stick her tongue out at you, mellohappy?

Yes, I think she did. But I will stick it right back, because I just got offered practically a free ride to Michigan, the 2nd ranked public university in the country. :-P

Still nothing in the mail...hmm....

haha, all in good fun! congrats on michigan!

for those who are going to the weekend...are you bringing resumes? because for me..alot has changed since i applied, in both academics and extracurriculars.

First, let me congratulate all those who have been awarded scholarships. UGA has many incredible opportunities and even if you are not awarded a Fellowship, you can still take advantage of special programs and travel opportunities. Actually, if the policies have not changed, there are scholarships for travel, workshops and various opportunities
that are not available to the Fellows but only to Honor Students.

As far as "advice" for the weekend... Be yourself, and make sure you fully participate in all the activities. Let your voice be heard during the observed discussion. Be sure to go out with the current Fellows after the formal program and attend a class or two if your schedule permits. Answer the interview questions honestly and stress your unique qualities and strengths. If nerves get the best of you, acknowledge it, take a breath and continue. Also, if possible encourage your parents to attend all the activities. Parents have opportunities to meet department heads, professors, and current students.

Remember, all of the candidates are very strong students with wonderful grades and test scores. Those students who are chosen seem to offer the group something unique. My son’s group was very diverse; they
had a variety of strengths, intended majors, interests and personal experiences. Try to stay calm and enjoy the weekend.

"Actually, if the policies have not changed, there are scholarships for travel, workshops and various opportunities that are not available to the Fellows but only to Honor Students."

I believe that is still correct. The Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities offers summer fellowships to non-fellows and the Courts Scholarship for study abroad is also for non-fellows, if I'm not mistaken. Getting the Stanford or Charter scholarship is a good deal as well, so I encourage everyone to take a close look at the opportunities UGA's Honors program offers.

i still havent heard back either... but it has been snowy near me lately if that matters...

anyone out there who went to the interview weekend?
