Four Year Course Choices

My guidance counselor and I were talking yesterday about courses I’d like to take over my four years. I understand it’s a bit early but I like for my life to be scheduled and planned.

Freshman (current year):

Honors English 9
Physical Education
Honors Earth and Space Science
Honors Algebra 2
Honors Biology 1
Honors Spanish 2
Photography 1 and 2

Summer:
Health Education

Sophomore:

Honors English 10
Honors Chemistry
Honors Spanish 3
College Pre-Calculus
AP Statistics
AP Physics 1
Honors World History

Junior:

AP Calculus AB
AP Spanish Language
AP United States History
AP Biology
AP Physics 2
AP English Language
AP Economics

Senior:

College Calculus 2
AP English Literature
AP Chemistry
AP Physics C
Honors Spanish 5
AP US Government
College English

How does this list look? I understand it’s going to be hard in these next few years but I think with hard work and patience I can manage As in them.

Whoa…

Trust me, it is very admirable and brave to sign up for lots of challenging courses, but I believe this is way too extreme and rigorous to handle, even for very smart and talented students. Taking 7 APs in any high school year is very challenging, and it’s not in your best interest. There will be too much stress and anxiety to the point where it would not be healthy. Most colleges won’t even expect 7 APs in your whole career in high school. 3-4 is enough for junior year, and maybe even 5 if you’re very brave and getting high grades. It is better to have lots of great ECs and pursue interests, and live life to the fullest, than spend your time on all of these classes.

It may also be worth thinking about taking two AP Lab Sciences in one year. While it may be doable if you have do a lot of hard work and perseverance, it is normally not recommended, even for people desiring to major in STEM. If you do well in an AP Lab Science junior year, I could understand someone signing up for two in senior year. However, signing up for 2, especially with AP Bio, junior year would probably be overwhelming. You also do not need to take all Physics 1, 2, and C. You only need to do one of them if you want to major in STEM, and if you’re interested in something physics related, 1 and C or 1 and 2 should be sufficient. Do make sure that by the end of high school, you have at least a year of bio, chem, and physics. You do not need to be in an AP level in each of them.

Please excuse me if I am wrong about this, but I am very confused by your foreign language choice. According to this, you are not taking Spanish 4 Honors or Regular junior year. Should I assume you are?

Everything else looks good, though!

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Good luck to you and have a good day!

AP Spanish and Honors Spanish 4 are interchangeable at my school, with 5 being the definite end.

Should I change out AP Physics 2 for something easier, like a Journalism class or something? I feel like I could handle them but obviously I’m not 100% positive. I want to take Econ for DECA. Should I just also cut out AP Physics C? I like Physics but I’m not planning on going into Physics in college.

Thanks for the advice!

@mediocresoccerplayer If you really like physics, and you end up doing well in AP Physics 1 and will be taking or have taken at least AP Calc AB, sure! AP Physics C would get you lots of college credit and will be impressive. If you decide not to take AP Physics 2, yes; I would recommend you switch out for an easier, fun elective. I am pretty sure there are a lot of fun and easy electives you can take. It is important to have at least one class like that every year as it helps you grow in terms of life skills. Do what you want to do the most. Econ and Journalism are both great choices. If you’re worried about rigor, see the counselor and teachers (+upperclassmen in the classes). In my school, regular Econ and Journalism are known to be easy As. It’s possible this could be the case for you as well.

Good luck to you and have a good day!

@anthonytheboy Thank you for the help!

@mediocresoccerplayer You’re welcome! I’m very glad I was a help!

Have a good day!
