Please could someone tell me more about these clubs, do you have to be a ******* to join it:P, do you have to do stuff before you get in. Are international students like me welcome? Im from Amsterdam, and here we have to do crazy things before entering clubs, there are people dying every year because of it, but that's Amsterdam right;)
But give me tips, expierences..,,,everything is good:D

They don't all make you do stuff, but some of them haze you. The amount of hazing is usually directly proportional to the fraternity's reputation. They'll probably think you're cool because you're from Amsterdam and more fraternities will want you to join.

ok...so the language barrier doesn't matter? and do you or somebody else know something about clubs at SB, I hear all kinds of bad news about it...there must be something positive about campus life there.....i hope:(

No. Just tell them you're from Amsterdam and the frat boys will jump all over you.

In fact, you should sneak in some Amsterdam product and sell it at high prices to stupid American boys :)

it is illegal and against most university policies for frats/sors to do hazing.

I would venture to say most fraternities at the big greek schools haze.

they sure do at UVa, and I wouldn't call UVa a big greek school.

Of course, generaelly the amount of hazing is directly proportional to how closely knit nationals is with the particular chapter. Local chapters have the potential to be the worst, although local chapters arn't at that many schools.

Some make you do crazy things, but they're not supposed to. Anybody is supposed to be allowed to join.

That doesn't stop sorors from making their pledges take ice-cold showers while standing on ice and reciting names of sisters from ten years ago. Slip up and you're there for the entire night.

^ Interesting, here sorority pledges are treated like Gods and right across the mountains they're hazed.

Dima,

Note: UVAMalex09's calling them sorors which is not an NPC term (5 of the women's sororities at your school) but an NPHC term (2 new unhoused sororities at your school).

NPC Greeks do things much differently than the NPHC sororities.

you already made this thread before.

Good call Motherdear, although from what I've heard about the NPHC sororities, they are supposed to be much more civil - but that could be all an act.

NPHC greeks haze much harder than NIC or NPC groups. Of course officially, no one hazes at all. :)

can you guy's give examples of each organiazation? I don't feel like going through my dad's Baird's manual of american college fraternities

If you do join a greek org, make sure it is a national one and not a regional one. That way when you graduate you will be more likely to be able to network through the org.

Examples do no good because the chapters are different on each campus.

Agreed...each house is different depending on the school. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about the hazing aspect. By definition hazing can be anything which is required of the pledges that is not simultaneoulsy required of a significant amount of active brothers (scavenger hunts, cleanups after parties, etc). Use pledge term as an experience to become closer with your pledge brothers and learn about the history of your house. Also, not all greeks are *******s, in fact most, at least at Michigan, aren't; you just have to find the right house. That is why rush exist, so you can go to the different houses in a sober setting and see which one suits you best (and of course they have to like you haha). Most fraternities would love someone from Amsterdam, so I wouldn't worry about that. Good luck.

"it is illegal and against most university policies for frats/sors to do hazing."

Its illegal for 80% of college kids to drink alcohol since they are underage. Yet they do it anyways. Hazing is as prevalent in most frats (especially the top ones) across the country as underage drinking is and people who dont realize this need to wake up

NPHC groups are the historically African American fraternities and sororities. This is the Divine 9 (although some people refuse to acknowledge Iota Phi Theta...whatever)

NPC groups are sororities which historically were white only (some organizations are officially women's fraternities)

NIC groups are male fraternities and some of the NPHC fraternities hold membership in NIC as well.

Of course nowadays all the groups are officially open to members of all races.

thank you bigred, mercury and nirvana, what bigred said is what i wanted to know about the diff groups. I am in a fraternity, so wasnt looking for info about houses, more just curious because i didnt even know that there were seperate organizations like that within the greek community.
