Frats at Duke?

Hi, I'm a freshman at Duke University and I was wondering if any of you who are going to the school can let me know what each of the frats at Duke are like.

Thanks in advance!

Can any College Confidential Blue Devils give me any information on frats??
If you want.. send me a PM.

Nobody on CC has any info on the frats.. man.. I guess nobody who is seriously considering a frat would be posting on a site as nerdy as CollegeConfidential anyway, haha!
Let me be the first then! Cheers!

Dude, you aren't going to get an answer only a few hours after posting. (not everyone knows everything)

About the frats I can only give you a little information (and pretty much nothing specific about the frats) as I have friends in frats but am not myself in a frat. (I decided to be an RA instead, though I think you can do both I didn't see the point since I'd be living on East again)

Anyway as I am sure you know rush at Duke isn't until the spring semester so you should have plenty of time to figure out what frat (if any) is the one that you fit in best with.

I know some guys in Sig Ep, and Sigma Chi pretty well and they are all pretty cool guys. (again sorry I can't give you the comparison of the frats that you want but you should have enough time to formulate your own opinions on what frat, if any, is right for you)

There are plenty of frats at Duke. They do rushing at spring semester like sirgecko said. ATO and DTD seem to be the best frats here though

the order of frats generally goes:

Sig NU
Kappa Sig
SAE
KA
DTD/ATO
PIKE
Sig Ep/AEPi
Everyone else

If you like trying to be the alpha male, then join SAE. Personally I think my class (sophomore) had a kind of weak pledge class for SAE (whatever they call themselves now). KA had a good one and Sig Nu had the top according to social perception.

Really these rankings are garbage, but this is what you wanted. If you are a loser and you join Sig Nu, you are still going to be a loser surronded by alpha males and it would suck.

Im an independent and I do fine. Sure it sucks not having mixers/formals, but really as long as you have friends in frats and are social you will do fine. I would make sure that you join a frat that you want to join and not one just because it is the "best" one you get a bid too.

Edit: I forgot Delta Sig. Generally a top 4 frat, last year they completely bombed during rush. They are famous due to the rolling stones article. Who knows where they belong

do not join a frat. really. do not join a frat and make duke a better place. and by a better place, i do not mean less alcohol.

do people actually use a term, "alpha male"?
and let's not call anyone a loser. there're a plenty of uber losers in sig nu.
last but not least, ... do we really need a ranking for f. frats?

op, dont ask questions like that here. just get off your computer. live your life. dont worry about your "social" whatever. be yourself, you'll meet good people. it does not suck not having whatever you heard of college. i dont even know what osuforme meant by "you will do fine". seriously be yourself and that's it... (and maybe along your journey, maybe you happened to like a group of people called frat. but dont even think about that yet.)

well.. if you want stuff to do @ this school that is purely social, you need to join one. otherwise you will be pieceing together your social life through friends that are in frats / selective living.

There's quite a difference between the list posted above and the personal preferences of people. In terms of notoriety, I guess that list may make some sense... but I can guarantee that if you ask any ten random people on campus to list their five favorite frats, it will change with each person.

If you choose to rush, DO NOT go into it with any preconceived notions. I can guarantee you'll miss out on a lot. Sure, you may end up in some random sections and go through some "awkward moments" on the first night of rush, but experiencing a frat for yourself is the only way to know what it's like. If you're joining a frat because of what everyone else thinks of it, then you need to take a second to think about what fraternity really means.

The greek system at Duke is pretty watered-down compared to anything you've seen in "Animal House" or at a state university. Frats have sections of dorms, not off-campus houses. Sororities don't have any form of housing. I strongly encourage everyone who's on the fence about greek life to rush, because rush is non-committal, and it's a lot of fun (albeit stressful at points).

You don't have to join a frat to be social. It all depends on what you like to do. If you like the type of activities a frat provides then join. If you don't then don't. Frats aren't the only social outlet on campus, just maybe the only one that appeals to you.

Thanks for all the info and advice!
I guess the idea here is to see what happens at rush and join the one that 'feels right' if any does at all.

noface, i didnt mean to set you off.

I used the term alpha male for lack of a better/nicer term. What would you like us to call them, "guys with inflated egos" or "people who think they are gifts to the world"?

Also, as with seahorse, in no way am I endorsing that list as my personal favorites or with whom I associate. That is just the way the frats generally go according to social notoriety.

Based on last years pledge classes (I'm a senior so my perspective is skewed a bit)

Sig Nu / SAE / KA are top
Kappa Sig / ATO are nearby
DTD / Pike / Theta Chi are next
Sig Ep / AEPI/ Sig Chi / Pi Kapp are all OK and sort of tied with one another
