When I have a party, I welcome people that I know, but I don't restrict them to gender. For frat parties, it's a whole different story. First off, you don't know the person, so effectively you're just letting anyone in, with priority given to girls. My concern with the greek system is that these social outlets are created as such that cause a high incidence of rapes in the system. Mostly, this is due to the gendered atmosphere of the greek system as a whole. This applies not just to gender, but also to race - and other socioeconomic factors. DG for example only has one black girl and other popular sororities don't have at least more than 2 minorities. If anything, these minorities are admitted because they act 'white' and are also used as blanketed resources to be prevented from being called racist sororities - which I find ironic since the greek system is historically white anyway. The trend seems to be just the same 50 years ago. In all, the white, heterosexual default is continually being emphasized with the presence of such a system, therefore placing individuals not greek or heterosexual or both into a different category.

You obviously have a liberal vs conservative dichotomy. There is no solution.

well, let me know the next time a HB or asian fraternity goes on a white outreach program.

There is truly no solution unless the greek system is abolished. When that happens, people start breaking these barriers of gender and race. With such powerful system that is adopted nationwide for an 'unregrettable' college experience, students are continually sucked into this system that determines the hiearachy of racial and social power.

Tenniscraze: Your remarks are very interesting and worthwhile, IMO. Many students seek out the greek system without really understanding what it's all about....

C'mon, tenniscraze:

When you throw a party, and hundreds of strangers wanna join in: who do you let in? Since you are homosexual, you will let in the hot guys, rather than the hot girls, since hot guys are more fun to party with than hot girls.

It's the same story for fraternities. Greek system at UVa = heterosexual by default. I' m sorry if you don't like it this way, but please don't discourage other heterosexual men(who WOULD actually enjoy greek system) from joining.

I won't have fun at UVa's homosexual fraternity, but I won't discourage gay men from rushing it.

^ I'll admit, I laughed.

How can you assume that just because I'm gay I would prefer hot guys to hot girls at my party? Yes I am interested in a relationship with a guy, but I am interested in meeting all kinds of people in my party. FYI, my parties don't work like the greek system where I reject girls just because I am not interested in them. I have said time and again that I disagree with the greek system, and that includes homosexual fraternities that uses exclusivity a criteria to empower themselves.

Why do I have a feeling that tennis would not let a bunch of frat guys into his party because they reinforce "gender stereotypes" and he could never let that happen at his enlightened party.
It just seems like total hypocrisy to me.

Yeah... and only because I would be friends with a "bunch of frat guys" in the first place, or even better, let a bunch of strangers crash my party. Sounds great!

why do i think tenniscraze is never throwing a frat party so it doesnt matter.

ahhh we're online at the same time again... creepy

Tennis: You have completely closed your mind about frat boys. You have judged them as racist and sexist, and IMO, you have no qualifications to do so. You acknoledge that you would not even be friends with frat guys in the first place, so where are you getting all of your information?
From 2 places, stereotypes and talking to your friends who agree with you about the evils of frats. That doesn't do anything positive, it just further convinces you of your rightness, and their wrongness.
The funniest thing, is that you accuse frats of reinforcing stereotypes and being closeminded people, yet that is exactly what YOU are doing to the frats.

well said, marlin.

tenniscraze=pretty out there.

He sounds like a nice fellow.
