I just received my UCR financial aid award as a transfer and received a pretty decent amount between my CalGrant, UCR Grant, work study, and FAFSA. The only issue is that I remembered that my dad isn't going to file his 2011 taxes until October because of an extension through the IRS. Does anyone have any experience with this? It says that my award offer won't be "official" until my dad uses the IRS data retrieval tool through the FAFSA app. Will my entire aid be in jeopardy here? I'm having panic attacks and won't be able to speak to a financial aid rep until Monday, so I really need some peace of mind until then. I actually plan on attending UCSC, but I figure the process is the same throughout the UC system. I have proof of the extension as well as my dad's 2010 taxes that indicate his income is <$50,000...

I’m just curious what the financial aid office told you …

The schools that I talked to each had something different to say. UCSC told me that as long as I filled out a packet that included my father’s 2010 tax return, proof of his tax extension, and his 2011 W-2’s, there would be no issue with my financial aid and I would still receive it in time for the start of the academic year. This was in stark contrast to UC Riverside, who told me that I might be in danger of losing my institutional grants. I talked to a counselor from UCSC and only spoke to an associate at UCR, so this may or may not be the case. I know that UCR has implemented the use of the IRS Data Retrieval tool, so they aren’t relying as much on verification. The financial aid associate from UCR did tell me that I could appeal the aid decision as a last case scenario, but mentioned that my advisor might be able to find a way around it before the beginning of the semester.

Wow, I forgot how much red tape the UCs can pile on and how much I hated the bureaucracy … good luck!
