Free college vs. More expensive, better college

I want to go to med school. My choices have come down to Montclair State University(which is known for it's speciality in educaiton) and Rutgers University(bigger, more popular, etc). I'm not sure which school to go to though. For Montclair, I got a full scholarship and honors program. I heard Rutgers has a good reputation(academic-wise), but I did not get any scholarship and only a small grant.

Which is more practical for the path of medicine: a free mediocre school or a better, expensive school? Would that extra money really be worth a stronger undergrad education?

Also, if I want to become some sort of surgeon, would it be fine if I major in chemistry in college(instead of biology)?

There are many factors to consider:

 • Can you afford Rutgers? Would you need to take out a lot of loans? If you need a lot of loans to attend Rutgers, I would suggest going to Montclair. Med school is going to be very expensive. You probably don’t want to have to pay off both of those loans when you get done.
 • Where can you see yourself growing academically, personally, and socially? There is more than just academic prestige to consider when attending college. Where would you rather go?

Overall, if you can afford it and you can see yourself being happy there, I would suggest Rutgers. I think there are more opportunities for you there.

I am by no means an expert on this subject. However, I hope my response helps at least a little bit. I am in a similar situation and this is how I am making my decision.

I think an Honors program would look better for medical school apps. Especially if you do a thesis on some type of medicine or research or something.

No, not really.

Research is helpful if you apply to research-oriented school.
