French Teacher Issues

I am having the same problem with my French teacher he is rly arrogant and expects us to know everything he teaches. He doesn’t give notes, no reference, nothing. He never tells us when tests are and he gives clues on what they will be but he lies on what would be on tests to make sure u study the syllabus. The final was crazy i had to classify specific words from 6 different stories and 4 of them he didnt give back so no reference. The specific words were like “walking” “talking” so yeah i feel your pain

Reading these comments, I’m beginning to wonder what the other ‘college prep’ classes are like at these schools because these French classes sound pretty normal to me (a bit harsher but not scandalously so, and if students frequently behaved like those in the thread above, I might get harsh too) and the “with no x, no y and OMG no z!!” comments are the other classes sound like primary school handholding…

your thoughts?

I’m not sure the OP wants to hear my thoughts. I agree with everyone who thinks the OP sounds like a grade grubber. I also think the OP needs an attitude adjustment before applying to the probably very selective colleges he/she might want to attend.

Every parent here has heard countless stories of unfair teachers. My own kids have told me stories of teachers that have been “unfair” to them. Sorry, but I don’t buy it. What would the teacher have it in for you? Bottom line, you do not see everyone else’s assignments, you are not the French teacher, and I am pretty sure some other kids in the class probably think the teacher is doing a great job. This teacher is probably doing a good job of preparing you for college level course work.

The hardest teacher I ever had in college (as an English Lit major) gave us nightmare tests: Read everything, and be prepared to write a great big long essay, in class, on whatever random line the teacher selected from some obscure 5000 word essay from Matthew Arnold. We all thought it was grossly unfair. It wasn’t. It was called knowing the material and being prepared.

The one time I remember a teacher losing it with our class was in AP Calculus. Dr. T. was an amazing teacher - tough but fair. One or two people in the class didn’t like her, though, and one day they made some snide comments and a couple of other people snickered. Dr. T LOST it and let us have it. She stormed out of the room. Oh, my gosh, we all felt so bad. We brought her a big bouquet of flowers the next day.

Don’t want to read the whole thread. But LOL - you might get an A- or B+ in a foreign language class and your college apps are ruined. They are not. You are being overly dramatic.

The OP hasn’t been back in awhile.

It seemed OP was in good company because some high schoolers had replied and totally empathized, giving their own examples of “unfair” practices; it made me wonder about whether what they described (basically, get grades for being a student) was common and should be considered normal… Such as the example of being able to classify verbs as something crazy… you don’t need a text for that, you just need to memorize them and this would be considered an “easy A” grade by many teachers I know, even if classifying adds a tiny bit of difficulty but nothing a high schooler (or smart middle schooler) shouldn’t be able to handle. Reading this is really puzzling to me: are there many HS classes like what they describe (what they find normal)? Are those underperforming HS or are those high performing HS? Clearly the students think themselves competitive students yet I’d imagine they’d be really lost in college if this is the norm at their school. Or are they just claiming bogus stuff to bolster their claims?

@MYOS1634 All valid questions. But one that really deserves its own thread.

@MYOS1634 to be honest, I think the OP probably sounds like a typical kid having a bad day. Lots of drama, nothing his his/her fault, it’s all the teacher’s fault.

My guess is that, if he/she spent the time to look back, the OP would probably take more of the blame for the situation than in that post.

Teenage kids can be whiney. The assume that anyone who isn’t paving their path with rose petals is out to get them. They sometimes KNOW that the world revolves around them- -that their concerns should be everyone’s concerns, that what doesn’t work in their favor is inherently unfair.

And they pretty much ALWAYS stand up for each other. Hence all the posts from kids here who are sure that this is about poor teaching, not poor learning.

They all, or almost all, get over it between the start of high school and college graduation. The OP just isn’t there yet, or wasn’t on the day of that first post.

Be sure to explain your low grades on your college application in the “Additional Information” section as being the fault of bad teachers. That will help each college make the right decision regarding your admission.

^She is on another college forum with a post entitled “College Confidential Issues”.

It discusses the unjust treatment she is receiving on this site. All of the unfair mistreatment, her superior performance relative to other posters, the moderators being mean, etc. She also takes offense at some posters use of Google to check spelling.

She is fearful that this discussion may ruin her entire existence and speed up global warming.

Alternatively she is studying French!!

I could be wrong, lol.

Thank you for the explanations
