My French grade is killing me....

Okay. I have a dilemma. I'm currently first in class.

But a few weeks ago, I got a 79 on a French test.

Now, I wouldn't have such a problem with it normally, because heck, I've failed tests before and still managed to get my grade up. But for him, he has about two tests a year, and tests count for about 50% of the grade.

I think it's wholly unfair. For one, I've consistently gotten 97's and above in my French classes all throughout high school. This my senior year. I had this same teacher my sophomore year and my junior year. I've displayed my French ability to him and he knows that I'm not a bad French student.

Secondly, I was absent the day he told us we were going to have a test the next time we met. So, the next time I went to French class I got jumped with a French test that I didn't expect to take.

Thirdly, everyone in the class (only 6 people---small class) did poorly on that test. I got the second highest grade. The lowest was a 49. The highest was a 92.

My grade in that class is currently an 88. That's a B in our school. That's not such a huge deal, I know... but the thing is, I could lose my class standing because of ONE test. One MEASLY test. Everyone in our class is really close in class rank. People are hundredths of a point apart in our super competitive class. I've worked so hard all three years of high school in order to stay on top. Countless nights downing coffee, many-a-sleepless weeks.... and I don't think one test that I took in French should have that great of an impact.

What do I do? Ask him for extra credit? Honestly, I'm afraid of him thinking I'm a grade monger, which I am to an extent. But the thing is, I don't think my French teacher likes me. I don't want him to HATE me now.

Sigh.

I don't know what to do. I kind of feel like crying but I like a fool at the same time. Please give me some input or advice. There's only one month left in the quarter. I must act soon because he's going on paternity leave.

Perhaps find a time to talk to your teacher about being unprepared for the test, and propose a small extra credit project or something like it. Make sure not to ask when he's stressed and busy but when he's in a good mood and make sure not to be accusatory, just lay out the fact politely and nicely. Don't talk about grades and rankings if you're worried about seeming like a grade monger, but do make it clear that you're working hard in the class. If that doesn't work, then...Plan B: study like hell, be perfectionist on every homework assignment, and hope.
