So I’m currently in my second semester of French to fulfill the foreign language requirement in A&S, and I HATE it. It is literally the worst class ever. Plus there’s no pass/fail option. Should I suck it up for the next two semesters or should I drop and take German pass/fail? I really have no desire to learn German, however this class has killed any desire to learn French as well. How good is the German department here too?
Why is French the worst class ever?
Not a fan of the language and the class is all busy work. While I understand German will be busy work as well, some of the stress would be relieved if I just took it pass/fail.
Anyone?
Have to wonder why a Cornell student would ask about how classes at Cornell are to an audience filled with non-Cornell students, Just wondering.
Really? Is it so bad that I want some advice and thought this would be a helpful place to go?
@newyork21, I had to take French, Italian and German as an undergrad bc I needed to pass proficiency exams in these 3 languages as a future phd student in art history. Took all 3 exams in my first semester of grad school before my proficiency waned. German is a very hard language to learn because of its syntax. Since you already have a background in French, I’d suggest taking another Latin-based language, like Italian or Spanish. Your french knowledge will make learning either of these languages easier. There are pros/cons to each. I think Cornell actually has a decent Italian dept & the classes will probably be smaller, making it easier to get additional help from your prof. But Spanish may have wider application for you.
