Since the title of this thread is Freshman Course selection, there was a Spring Orientation which took place on March 15-16 at which I understand studentls were given some advisement regarding Freshman courses. There is another Spring Orientation on April 15-16 which Elon’s web site says will also include small group academic advising, going to picking Freshman courses. But both those dates are before the May 1st deadline for deposits & some kids may not yet have chosen where to enroll. Will there be another advising session for students who miss those two or who decide on Elon a bit later? Theonly other orientation date I see on the posted academic calendar is just before classes start in late August. By then everyone should have their schedules.

Those orientation dates seem awfully early; my other two kids didn’t even have to think about freshman courses until after they enrolled, sometime during the summe.

My daughter attended a March orientation last year but did not pick her courses until May. The advisement at orientation just walked them through how to use the website. Since only about 2/3 of the kids who enroll at Elon attend spring orientations, I am sure the rest of them are provided with the information they need in order to sign up for classes in May.

As the thread explains earlier, students pick a lot of courses in May, then Elon chooses some of those courses and arranges their schedule.

Thanks Lafalum. We actually got a packet in the mail today from Elon which included info in it which said that if you don’t attend one of the Orientations, the information about completing the online course request forms will be sent by mail and should be submitted to Advising by June 1. So that’s reassuring. I also noticed that one of the topics during the Phoenix Friday is the Elon Advising Advantage, so maybe it will be covered.

mhc: I can fax you the info the kids got during orientation if need be; apparently is wasn’t a big deal (according to my daughter)…

There were some people who thought the kids were actually picking classes that session; didn’t happen…and most of the info is actually on the website and ontrack…

Hope this helps…

I’m actually curious if there are advisors on-call during the at-home process, anyway, for students to discuss what introductory electives can be used to fulfill requirements for certain majors (apart from the freshman core)…I guess when we start this my daughter can find out…

Rodney, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Pretty much every class fills some sort of requirement, either for their major or for the general studies core requirements.

However, it appears Elon is re-evaluating the core requirements for classes starting after this year’s freshmen… stay tuned.

^^tx lafalum;
when we were there last week, it was mentioned that this change will probably not be implemented for fall of 2011 (they weren’t even sure if it would go into effect for 2012 freshman…)

mhc48 - As I have posted before my d did not attent either orientation. We didn’t visit until early April and my d did not decide until late April. There is no worries with the course selection for fall. As previous posters have said including myself, you pick ten courses. They do the schedule for you. We also had the situation where she was scheduled for a class but the academic counselor caught her dual credit might count and urge her to take another class until we could sort that out. It worked out and that saved her a class. I was impressed they really paid attention. As I recall we did call Academic counseling before submitting final course choices.

What I felt maybe we missed at the orientation and Rodney and others can help you with the information was knowing about other opportunities are available such as their leadership porgram. Perhaps also the ability to meet others who are attending ahead of time. Phoenix Friday was helpful - very honest discussions. It was refreshing to my d to see others who were like her not totally decided. She needed the time to make her college choice. She adjusted well and is very happy she chose Elon.

Rodney - we received (I am assume they all are online) a sheet called the checklist for graduation requirements in Elementary Education. Perhaps your d’s major also has this as it is very staright forward.
