If I were to put down Wall first and Paterson second, and the girl I’m planning to room with puts down Paterson first and Wall second, what would happen? Just curious

Then you leave yourself more at the mercy of the housing office, in general. Of course in this specific case, you both would have to be accepted into Wall. If that didn’t happen they would put you in Paterson (if there was room).

It would be kind of unusual to apply to Wall and put it as a second choice, I think.

If I apply to Wall and get in, would I be allowed to decline it if the girl I want to room with doesn’t get in? Or does getting into Wall bind you to it?

I think housing decisions are final, no matter which dorm it is. They really have to be, otherwise it is all a mess. But they really try to accommodate people that request a particular roommate and the dorm that both roommates want, but it is very important you have the same dorms in the same priority. With women, they do sometimes have to place people in JL even if they did not request it, simply because of space issues and the fact that classes always have more women than men.
