I have seen many comments on other threads about dorm choices for freshmen, and i was wondering if anybody who is a student, or knows someone at chapman, could post the pros and cons of each dorm, or at least if they are good or bad?

the freshman dorms are Henley, Pralle Sodaro, Glass, and North Morlan
they say all rooms are 3 people except for Morlan

I have a friend at Chapman who is staying in Pralle Sodaro and she is happy there. She said she absolutely did not want Morlan so when she filled out the FFC thingy she picked every class so she wouldn’t end up in Morlan. She described Morlan as “motel” style and they don’t have a hall. Her dorm is a corner room so she has 2 roommates and they have their own private bathroom. She said Glass is the nice, but she is happy where she is. Hope that helps!

Everyone talks negatively about Morlan, so I think I’m going to give some positives about living there :)

First off, it is so incredibly social. The very first night, everyone gathered out on the lawn and introduced themselves to everyone. People are always leaving their doors open (something you can’t do in the other dorms) and people will stop by and say hi all the time. It really has been a great way to get to know people because I don’t just know people down the hall, I know people on all the floors. Sure, we don’t have actually hallways, but we do have halls and I know pretty much everyone on them. Heck, we even have animals here. The Morlan bunnies are always out in the courtyard and the Morlan cat has hung out in my room numerous times.

Second, the rooms aren’t that bad. Granted, they look awful when you first see them, but I’ve grown really fond of the room and only having one roommate instead of two is awesome. Decorating really makes a huge difference and sharing a bathroom with the suitemates has never been a big deal. The fact that it’s motel style really turned me off at the beginning, but now I actually LOVE being able to walk out of my room and instantly you’re outside. Sure, Morlan is the farthest of the freshmen dorms, but it’s honestly a one or two minute walk away from the others. It’s not going to kill you.

Honestly, I don’t have any real major complaints living in Morlan. It’s been so much fun and it’s definitely not as bad as it seems. Hope this helps :)

Thank you very much for your response. I appreciate hearing about Morlan from an actual resident’s perspective! Now I am not so worried about getting it for my dorm room :] hahah

@AlmostThere I agree with KollegeKat, thanks very much for the information! I love how the Morlan Freshman Foundations Courses sound, but I was uncertain about the dorms themselves, so your post is very reassuring :)

Current freshman now. Living in Henley…if I had a choice I would be in Morlan. I’m not sure if you can understand until you live there…both have very different vibes.

My son had Glass as a freshman, but wished he had Morlan.

From a parent’s perspective it seemed kind of sketchy, but he liked the additional space and outside entry (instead of a hallway) much better. Never lived there, moved off campus as a sophomore - but many of his friends loved Morlan.

It is multiple floors and they use balconies. I hope when I apply and hopefully get in I’ll be put into Morlan. Everyone keeps saying it’s the best and most social, although Henley looks amazing. Good luck guys, keep us updated.

I have a question about housing … I definitely want to attend Chapman, and I will be able to afford the $200 deposit.
However, on the website it says the housing deposit is $50 plus a $600 security fee. Is there anyway that the $600 can be deferred? Because honest to God, I want to go to Chapman more than anything, but I don’t know if there is any way that my family will be able to come up with $850 in less than a month. This is really starting to freak me out. I’m going to call Chapman tomorrow to ask about this but it’s making me really nervous.

I don’t know if it can be deferred, but when my son lived in the dorms in freshman and part of sophomore year, they held onto this deposit.

When he broke his housing contract to move off campus 2nd semester of sophomore year, they kept the $600 fee. I was amazed, since we did that as part of a financial hardship request. Didn’t make any difference. They kept the money.

Best of luck. It’s a great school. Hope that doesn’t hold you up. Maybe they will accept a payment plan?

Hey annathatshibby, try not to worry too much about calling. I know it’s nerve-wracking but I’ve called up Chapman so many times to ask them questions, and they’re super friendly and nice every time. Good luck!
