Freshman Engineering Tablet Requirement

So I saw there was a very old forum about this same question, but as that was over 5 years ago I feel like things have probably changed. I was just wondering what the best tablet to buy is, because I really don’t want to spend $1,500-$2,000 on a new tablet, but I also don’t want to be disadvantaged in my classes. Any suggestions?

@student810, look here → https://www.eng.vt.edu/it/requirement. These were updated earlier this month (March, 2016)

My daughter is in Engineering and went with the Surface Pro 3. Look here this might help you: https://www.reddit.com/r/VirginiaTech/comments/36bl5e/best_laptop_for_freshman_engineering_student/

For some reason the copy and paste shows up right until I post it. In place of the asterisks type in reddit.com

Sorry It will not let me put the word in. It keeps showing up as asterisks when I post it. Article too long to post

@Schmitty Okay thanks. I was actually looking at the Surface Pro 3, I’m fairly fond of the Microsoft tablets. Do you know where I could find it the cheapest? Or what the lowest price I would be able to find it for would be?

Try Costco - Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Bundle | Intel Core i7 | Windows 8.1 Professional | Office 365 Personal | Tempered Glass Screen Protector $1099.99 plus they are offering a free one-year subscription to McAfee Multi Access. We used Costco because she wanted to try it out to see if she liked it. Costco has a 90 day return policy everyone else has 30 days. They also offered Square trade protection for $99 for 3 years other places will charge more than double that for the same protection.

My son is 3rd year eng and uses a Surface Pro 2 (that was current at the time) and it’s been fine for his needs. Think it’s 128g and 8MB ram. Get a good case!! He pretty much leaves his laptop in his room all the time and takes the tablet to class and everywhere else. It really gets a workout.

Thanks guys! That’s all really helpful. @JustGraduate That brings up another question: How important is the secondary laptop? I was given a Thinkpad E545 from my high school, would that be adequate or would I need to look for a better secondary computer?
