Is this schedule a good start for a premed student?

BIO 101 (Gen Bio I, with lab)
CHEM 121 (Gen Chem I, with lab)
MATH 161 (Calc I)
FYS 175 (required first year seminar)

I have received 5s in calc AB and in chem, but some people argue it's better to "retake" the intro courses because it's both a good review of foundational material, and a good GPA boost. What do you think?

I’m not entirely sure yet, definitely a science though. I am currently considering neuroscience, but I want to see how my first year plays out first, I’ll probably declare my major in the beginning of sophomore year.

The different opinions I’ve heard both have convincing arguments, which is why I’m having trouble deciding.

How would you rank the rigor of your high school? Did you feel adequately well-prepared for the AP exam? Did you study for more than a few days for the exam (separate from studying for your class itself)?

I think my high school was pretty rigorous. The AP classes themselves were more demanding than the AP exam for sure. I got an A- in chem and a B in calc with a lot of studying. The tests in those classes were hard, the AP exams for each were a breeze compared to the in-class tests.

Friend is going into premed. He told me med schools dont accept ap credit, and they want the college course bc they get to see your grade in the course

oh yeah, the one thing I felt that my high school lacked the most was lab. The labs were really cheap and ineffective. That’s the weakest point of my classes. I’m not sure how important lab experience is for college level labs.

Then you have to choose upper level psych and bio electives, and lastly you make sure to fill up the distribution requirements for humanities/social sciences.

Although neuro is top of my list at the moment, I’m also considering chem, bio, psych…

Agree with above that the view on retaking AP courses in college is variable. A lot depends on your major. If you plan a chemistry or biology major, I would retake the courses BIO 101 (Gen Bio I, with lab) and CHEM 121 (Gen Chem I, with lab) that you listed in your first post. If you plan a major in the humanities and want to only take the minimum science you could CONSIDER the AP credit. But be warned there are med schools that do not accept AP credit for required courses.

The course you may seriously want to consider NOT retaking is calculus. If you did well enough to place out of calculus (CALCULUS 161), you may not want to retake it in college. It is often taught better in HS as they often give the college classes to TAs who may have little experience teaching and are math grad students who cannot conceive of college students who do not ‘get’ mathematical concepts. If you are majoring in a science where knowlege of calculus is key (physics or possibly chemistry), you should retake it. But if you are in a bio or other science major, you may have enough calculus already and can save yourself some first semester grief. Biology and Chemistry together will be tough enough.

MOST IMPORTANT: The first semester in college should be carefully thought out. There is a lot of college adjustment going on. You have never had a college exam and don’t know how that goes. You will not get Extra credit opportunities like in high school to bring up a bad grade. You have never had a college final. And you have never had the kind of freedom that you will get in college. Some students do not adapt well and grades suffer, especially if they poorly estimated what they can handle. It is much easier to keep a GPA high once you have had a semester in college than to spend the rest of your college career trying to bring up a low GPA. Plan CAREFULLY!!! Talk to Premeds at your school if you have not done so.
