Freshman Housing

If my daughter applied early decision and got her deposit in very quickly, what are the odds that she will get her first choice for housing? She requested a possible suite style room in Global, where each person gets their own room and they share a bathroom. Is this even open to freshmen? In addition, which is better in your opinion, Global or Colonnades? Thanks!

I also got in Early Decision. My understanding is that ED students have priority in housing so we should get our first choices.

It’s based on the day Elon receives your deposit. If you sent it in as soon as she was accepted, you’ll be at/near the top of the list. If you waited until 12/31 (after the EA students got in on 12/15) she may be closer to the middle of the list.

Our daughter was accepted ED at midnight and we put in her deposit at 8 AM that morning. She got her first choice. Good luck!

If my daughter is still trying to decide about schools but was accepted under early action, should she go ahead and send in her housing deposit or wait? Also, is the housing deposit refundable?

Yes, pay the $500 enrollment deposit immediately! Housing selection and course registration priority are based on the date the enrollment deposit is received. Also, prospective students who have paid the enrollment deposit can attend a spring orientation, which is a great way to learn more about the school if your daughter is still deciding. And the deposit is refundable until May 1. So nothing to lose, lots to gain, go ahead and send it in!

Thanks for the recommendation! Since we are still focusing on filling out honors & scholarship materials and researching schools, we have totally overlooked what we are supposed to do after the acceptance. Which dorms are the best for studious, somewhat initally quiet girls? Global looks promising since she is really into the whole global experience.

Hello! I am a freshman girl at Elon University. I live in the Global Neighborhood, and must say, it is AWESOME. Not only is my dorm beautiful, but you are in a fantastic location. Global Commons is right in the center of the Global Neighborhood, and the Great Hall is comparable to the library. (better, in my opinion.) So I study right in Global Commons, which stays open all night, and can easily and safely walk right back to my dorm, even if it’s 2 AM, since it’s so close. There’s also Argo Tea right in Global Commons, so that’s convenient. Plus, I love the way I have grown as a global citizen. There are Global Neighborhood events every Tuesday night, such as Global Dinners with guest speakers and discussion following, a global film series, and more. We even had a Global Neighborhood trivia night, which was really fun. The Global Neighborhood consists of 5 dorms, and the Resident Student Association actually calls them “houses,” and tries to get the students to strongly associate with their house, as in the house concept in Harry Potter. There is a points competition between the houses, and each house gets points depending on how many people go to the Global events. So that’s really cool, and I love it. You build a house pride and get closer with people not only on your floor, but on other floors of your dorm building as well.

Anyway, to answer the original poster’s question, Elon says if you apply ED and get your deposit in quickly, you have priority on housing. This is true for the most part, but not guaranteed. I have known a couple people that applied ED and sent their deposit in quickly, and have gotten their last choice housing. For the most part this does not happen, but I just wanted to let you know, there is that possibility, and I definitely have heard stories about it. (One of my friends applied ED, and had Historic as her last choice, but got put into the all girls dorm in Historic, West, instead of her top choice, Global.) I personally applied Early Action, and did not put my deposit down until March. But I still got Global, my first choice! The reason for this is because I applied to a Living Learning Community in Global, and if you get accepted into the LLC, your housing is set. There are some really cool LLCs in global I suggest students applying to if they want guaranteed housing in Global. The LLCs in Global, off the top of my head, are: Creative Arts, International, Italian, French, Spanish, and Leaders in a Global World.

The OP asked if it is possible for a freshman to have the housing option where there are two single rooms, and a small living room and bathroom, in Global. We call these pods. I know of some freshmen living in pods, who simply checked on the housing app that they’d be game for a single room. Obviously, they’re in high demand, and sophomores get priority. (Global is primarily freshmen, though, but in the case of a living learning community floor, upperclassmen can stay, and they’d get the pods before the freshmen.)

Okay, now to the question Colonnades vs. Global- which is better? I love Global, but I may be biased, considering I live there. The layout in both Global and Nades is very similar. Two double rooms, connected by a bathroom. Apparently the double rooms in Nades are slightly larger, but I think it depends. The thing is, depending where in the building you are, your room might be slightly different in size. For example, if you have a standard double room, but it is between two pod suites, you will not have to share the bathroom with another double, and your room itself is larger. (That’s how my room is!) The windows in the Nades rooms are larger than the windows in the Global Rooms, but not by too much. Nades also has a gorgeous quad area outside, and Nades dining hall is right there. (I go to Nades dining hall a lot; it’s my favorite dining hall on campus.) KOBC, the business school, is also right there, so if you’re going to take a lot of business classes, Nades is a convenient location. So those are all pros to living in Nades.
As for Global, I listed a lot of the perks already. I love Lake Mary Nell being right there- so although we don’t have much of a quad, I can easily sit out by the lake and study, which is really relaxing. Lakeside dining hall is very close to Global, and Lakeside has pretty good food. (The only reason I prefer Nades is that they have more dietary restriction options in Green World.) Global is much closer to the gym and to Moseley Student Center as well. Nades and Global are about equal distance to the library. (But Global Commons is an ideal study space, and Nades has nothing comparable to that.) One other perk to Global is that you are pretty much surrounded by other first-years, which is great for making friends. Colonnades is a mix of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.
If your child decides she wants to live in Nades and wants to really guarantee that there are LLCs there, too. (As well as in Historic, but I had no desire to guarantee housing in Historic haha)
One final perk to Global is that, except for Global C, there are classrooms on the first floor of every building. These classrooms are used for a variety of classes, especially freshman classes like Global and English. My roommate had English at 8 AM in the same building that we lived in, so that was very convenient for her!! They also make excellent study/work spaces at night if I’m too tired to walk to the library or Global Commons.

Wow, sorry for the lengthy response; I really hope it helps you, though! Feel free to message me if you have any questions at all.

danceNprance - thanks so much for the detailed information. This is very helpful!
