newestnewb what was your physics preparation prior to the 103/104 sequence, and what was your SAT score? I’m curious because the general consensus is that the class is ridiculously tough to do well in, maybe you’re just a genius?

Why did the math majors advise against doubling up math in the fall but not the spring?

Just in order to acquaint yourself to everything without taking on too big a load too early. One said that he had everything settled by spring term and was able to handle a heavier courseload then that he said he might not have been able to take on in the fall because of all the adjustments he had to make to Princeton life.

ib612,

I would advise keeping in mind that the most vocal people (ie the people leaving reviews on the course guide, etc) are the people who have bones to pick because they didn’t do well for whatever reason. Maybe they were underprepared. Maybe they just suck at physics. Maybe they didn’t go to class and left the homework for the last minute. Whatever.

Lots and lots of people take PHY 103/104. For I would say the vast majority of them, there’s really not much to complain about - it’s just another intro class that they have to get through before entering the full engineering program. Since it’s so standard, they feel no need to comment on it on course reviews. Only the vocal minority comment - and there’s your “general consensus.”

Again, I would simply recommend taking it and seeing how it goes for you before forming an extreme impression either way, based on your friends’ commentary or mine.

What do you guys think of:

Math 215
Chemistry 207
Physics 103
Writing Seminar

in the fall term? Is it too less or too much?

MAT 215 is prob way above me, but if you’re good with numbers then probably manageable. and it’s only 4. . .

i was thinking

MAT 201
PHY 103
CHM 201 [i suck at chemistry, don’t judge me]
Foreign lang. 101
and writing seminar.

i know you’re only supposed to take 4. . .but there’s a seminar i want to take spring semester :\ and i’m taking COS 126 in spring prob

A question about freshman seminars:
I am assigned to a spring writing seminar and I’ve heard that you should take your writing seminar and freshman seminar at the same time. All of the freshman seminars that I’m interested in are offered during the spring. So should I not apply for a fall freshman seminar?

Derivate, apparently we’re not allowed to take two math courses (or any two courses in a single department) in the fall anyway.
http://www.princeton.edu/welcometigers/docs/FAQ_Freshman_Course_Selection.pdf

I can’t believe I am posting this, but if I were enrolled this year, I would take, International Relations, a new Language (russian, swahilli, or arabic), intro to anthropology, and econ 100.

So I’m still kinda confused about a few things.

The Hum 216-219 sequence, for the fall semester, is Hum 216/217 one class or two?

And if one has AP science credit, they would still have to take two lab sciences to graduate (AB candidate)?

I’m thinking about taking 5 classes, mostly because I don’t have to take physics or chem:

MAT 200-something
COS 126
ECON 100
ORF 245
and a frosh sem or Spanish 100-something

What do you guys think? I’m an ORFE major btw

You’re not allowed to take more than 4 classes fall semester of your freshman year

That’s not true.

Anyway, 5 intro classes seems pretty doable. Each of the classes you’ve listed (depending on the math, but even 203/204 is not that hard, depending on the semester) is widely accepted as being relatively easy.

Math 215
Hum 216
Hum 217
Writing Seminar
French 101

How much work do you think Hum 216-219 would be? I’ve heard insane stories about it…

That looks like the most work-intensive load a fall-semester freshman could possibly be allowed to take, and that’s if your adviser allows you to take it. If I were you and I had already fulfilled the FL requirement (I don’t know if you have or not), I definitely wouldn’t take French.

you do not want to be taking 5 classes if you are taking the HUM sequence.

Derivate: From what I’ve heard, the HUM sequence is very very intense. Math 215 is also supposed to be rough, language classes are always a lot of work, and writing seminar takes a lot of time. You are probably biting off more than you can chew here. I’m sure that you were a superstar at your high school but Princeton is a whole different ball game and your freshman fall is not the time to be taking a load like this; it’s the time to be looking around and getting your bearings. Trust me, I did the same sort of thing freshman year and ended up getting basically slapped in the face academically. I survived and it was a good learning experience, but going back I would have done things differently.

When you get on campus, talk to your academic adviser, and if you’re going on OA or CA talk to your leaders. They’ll all help you figure out what you want to do. And by no means listen to the other freshmen! They don’t know anything and the first couple weeks of freshman year there are a lot of games of “who’s bigger” academically, so your pride can lead you into making mistakes. I’m sure you’ll get it sorted out in September!

Thanks for the advice. What should I do then? I’m going to be a math major, so I would have to take Math 215.

I really want to do the Hum sequence.

And I’m forced to do the writing seminar.

So I should drop French then and do it another time?

I’m thinking:

Integrated Science (=2 courses)
Freshman Seminar (if I get one) or MAT 201 (maybe 203, but I don’t think I’m good enough for that class).
Spanish (depending on placement) or a dance class (300-something or 400-something).

I’m not sure what concentration I want, but I think it will be something in the sciences; my favorite are biology and chemistry. I’m also interested in all the other sciences, but don’t think (at this point) that I would want to concentrate in them.

Thoughts?

Also, my friend took the HUM sequence her freshman year, and according to her it was epic and incredibly fun but also an insane amount of work.

If you are doing any of the combined courses (hum, integrated, or emp) you DO NOT want to be taking more than 4 classes. Most of the combined classes are really closer to 3 classes in the amount of material covered/homework expected. 201 would probably be useful for integrated, but not necessary. I would make sure to at least one humanities class that you are interested in (frosh sem or dance?)
