My D is considering her acceptance to Baylor and I’m curious if freshman year is a weed-out program like other schools. MY Purdue experience was of test averages in the 30’s with a bell curve and many kids flunking out. Beyond freshman year they stopped that kind of approach.
My daughter did not experience that at all. Teachers even had options like dropping your lowest test score, or some extra credit. Some classes/professors are harder than others but no intentional “weeding out”. Her freshman professors were extremely supportive and helpful and available. Right now she is a sophomore and last semester had her first taste of organic chemistry. I think that the kids weed themselves out when they come to a subject/class that they find very difficult even when they put in as much effort as they can. It isn’t always easy but is doable. At least that is my d’s experience. She is neuroscience/pre-med.
Hi,
I am looking for Neuroscience/Pre med Honors program.Could you please provide classes that your daughter took in freshman year. And also details of which classes/professors are tough.
How is honors residence college.
How many students they will have in biology/Chemistry/calculus classes like General ed.
Any info is helpful.
Thanks a lot.
My daughter is neuroscience/pre-med, and she is in the BIC (Baylor Interdisciplinary Core) Program. You can find professor ratings by asking in google- but a better way once you are at the school is to ask your classmates. If you have been accepted join the facebook page and there will be a lot of advice. BIC combines your general ed classes in an interdisciplinary way and takes the place of the regular gen ed program.
Baylor provides major academic planners (MAPS) for each major that help you plan each semester along with an advisor.
Largest classes she has been in have been 75-100, most are around 30, some sections are as low as 15. The Intro classes are the largest, but often have smaller sections where you meet once a week for the large lecture and 2 or 3 times in a smaller group.
Freshman year she took chapel both semesters, first semester was a small, liturgical, reflective time in a chapel in the honors college, the other semester was the regular, large chapel. Other than that she took:
1st Semester
3 BIC Classes, Intro to Neuroscience, Biology 1(Honors Section)
2nd Semester
2 BIC Classes, Chem 1, Calc 1, Biology 2
She loves the Honors Residential College. It is an older building (more personality, and a lot of fun traditions) and she has made very good friends there.
Thanks a lot for details. You are really helpful.
