I graduated in 2006; basically blew high school. Didn’t care about it at all, and was basically the smart kid who just wouldn’t put in the effort.
After graduation, I went to work. I’ve been a hiring manager for a fast food franchisee, and I really want to go to college and get my degree in some type of management.
Knowing that I have lousy transcripts, I studied and studied for the ACT and got a 29. I plan to retake it. I’m looking at UTSA and Ole Miss.
My question is, can I get into either school now? Am I still eligible for merit aid at my age?
Thanks so much!
The cut-off from a traditional student program to an adult education program for a lot of schools is twenty-six. I started as a Freshman at twenty-two, with a similar high school history, so I have a vague idea of what you’re going through.
I applied to a school with a high acceptance rate (some schools even have open admission) and a relatively easy curriculum, got a great GPA, and am now looking to transfer to a more prestigious school. Bide your time wisely and use what may seem like an undesirable circumstance to your favor. Play the system to your advantage. Start with community college if you need to in order to prove to a four-year university that you have potential.
The hardest part is getting in, but I can’t describe the feeling of being able to call yourself a legitimate college student.
Although it may be difficult to deal with your fellow students, most instructors will praise your decision to complete a college degree.
