Freshmen Seminars

i heard from a few people that they have already recieved a list of the freshmen seminars being offered next year. i haven't gotten this in the mail yet so i just wanted to see if anyone else has.

Amadani,

My daughter has not received anything yet either... don't sweat it. Perhaps, check in with Learnlink > Connect2010 > "Talk to Faculty" and ask a question about it if you don't get anything by mid-late July.

Thanks for the tip. Son hasn't received anything either but he will keep an eye on the mailbox.

someone post if info becomes available-i'll be on vaca for the next 10 days so no normal mail, just email- normal mail is so 5 minutes ago anyway ;-P

is there still no word on the seminars. i heard that we need to put in our preferences before we get to school on the 26th. has anyone else heard anything yet?

i was looking through some of the available seminars for next year at <a href="http://www.college.emory.edu/current/courses/atlas/fall.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.college.emory.edu/current/courses/atlas/fall.html</a>
what are you considering taking? i think that Through the Looking Glass: Anthropology Looks at American Culture seems interesting. anyone else have any thoughts?

i have no idea i dont think i'll be taking my seminar till second semester

I'm considering..
Intro Philosophy 100S, since I am interested in philosophy but haven't really read any books or taken a philosophy class or anything.

Also,
Eng 190: Freshman Seminar: Utopia and Dystopia in Cyberspace
Johnston, TT 10:00-11:15, Max: 15

This sounds great. I love science fiction books. Heck, one of the required books is 1984 by George Orwell.

Freshman seminars are awesome.

i asked admissions about this and they replied saying that we do not sign up for anything until we get to emory, during orientation/registration week.

thanks for clearning that up. see any other interesting seminars?

uh yeah-all of them

i know what you mean. i see a new one everyday that i think would be fun to take: History that Never Happened, Reading the Bones of the Ancient Dead, and (Un)natural Disasters all look really interesting. it will be difficult to choose.

Is there a place to look at all the freshman seminars together or do you just have to page through each department?

You guys should receive a packet that includes two course booklets (one with the seminars and descriptions and another with the suggested freshman courses and their descriptions). It also comes with two pamphlets and a 128 MB flash drive with different FAME information on it as well -- which I thought was pretty great. I received mine today, so everyone should be receiving theirs within the next few days if you haven't already. Don't stress too much about finding the courses/seminars or anything. Between the booklets and the info on the flash drive, you pretty much get most, if not all, of the info you need to know. :)

If you're really at a loss as to which seminar to take, I took the JS 190/Rel 190 Suffering, Healing, and Redemption seminar last year and it was AMAZING. Highly recommended. PM me if you have more questions about it.

i live in georgia and still haven't recieved that packet with the course listings. lame. maybe tomorrow.

Are there any freshman seminars to completely avoid?

The best advice about seminars - and this goes for every class you take at any University as well - choose the class based upon the professor, not necessarily the course content.

You have this short opportunity to learn from these amazing minds. Look at the Class Comments Learnlink conference and find out who those great professors are. And take every class that they offer for as long as you're a student. You might take something that you never thought that you would like and end up a major in that subject. The conference will also tell you who not to take as well.

that makes a lot of sense. where do we go to see these class comments?

on the learnlink desktop go to emory announcements, then to class comments at the top, and the choose your subject area.
