For most colleges, It's just logistically hard to have the freshman go abroad. Many have freshman dorms and expect that class to spend the time simply adjusting to college studies and being on their own. My son is doing an abroad this fall in his Junior year, and that is when my daugther did one also. You would have two more years of maturity, life experiences and hopefully more money for travel when abroad.

I wouldn't. Your first year is when you meet the most people and when your school gives you a ton of help about things like housing, registering, living in the dorms for the first time, getting to class, studying, all of that. Do it your sophomore or junior year - most people do for a reason.

Why would you want to go abroad already?

Why would you not want to study abroad? It's the combination of a gap year while still paving way in your education?
