My friend (Class of 2013) is looking at colleges and has asked me to help her out. I was wondering if the CC community could maybe offer a couple of suggestions. This is her criteria:

Solid classics department and english department (with creative writing option)
an excellent study abroad program
a beautiful campus
small school
plenty of groups/clubs
a history of activism
a school that people have heard of

Good ECS/leadership positions, SAT: CR 700 Math 580 Writing 730 (2010 overall)
Rank: top 10%
Rec letters: solid

She's from south NJ and would prefer to keep it close (for her parents sake) but farther away suggestions are still welcome! Thanks in advance.

Sarah Lawrence, Bard… Others are escaping me right now, but I’m sure other CCers will have more suggestions :)

Does the student need financial aid? Is the student hoping for merit aid?

She will most likely qualify for need aid.

Bumping! She really needs some suggestions!

When you say that she’ll likely qualify for need based aid, will she qualify for the AMOUNT of aid that she needs?

For instance, if she qualifies for $35k in aid at a school that costs 60k, but her parents will only pay $10k, then that’s a huge problem.

Here on CC, there are a large number of NJ residents that can’t afford their EFCs because the cost of living (housing, taxes, etc) is so high there that families often can’t afford their EFCs even when they have good incomes.

Does she have a non custodial parent?

She needs to run some Net Price Calculators with her PARENTS to find out the financial situation. Maybe try a variety of schools’ NPCs…Rutgers, Mt Holyoke, Sarah Lawrence, etc to see what the situation is.

I’m not really looking specifically for financially affordable suggestions. Just suggestions that meet those criteria. Thanks though!
