My daughter is just beginning her college search (she's finishing her Freshman year) and we went to visit James Madison University in Virginia this past weekend.

She had an absolute blast!!!!!

She said that the students were all so friendly, not only to her, but to each other. (We visited another college campus a few months ago where no one really gave us the time of day and didn't seem very happy to be there!).

Are there any other colleges out there that are known for having friendly students?

Wow, that's quite an early start to the college search process, its a definite advantage to start so early.

Rice University in Houston, TX is well-know for their "freshman experience" which sounds very friendly. I'll let you know, I'm visiting this friday.

Its quite a different caliber of a school, but Samford University in Birmingham Alabama is quite nice, a Christian school.

there is a thread with about 10 pages of the friendliest college campuses, so people are a little burnt out on this topic.
use the search function if you want to find out more.

I've visited 15 plus schools in the past year with my daughter. Without a doubt the friendliest school we've visited was Earlham in Indiana. The kids there were so welcoming and outgoing that it blew my daughter (and me) away.

Carolyn, I just read in TIME that someone threw a pie in BIll Kristol's face at a lecture he was giving at Earlham. (the political commentator, not to be confused with the comedian!)

Oh yes, that happened the night after we were there. Sparked quite a bit of debate on a Quaker campus with some folks saying that it goes against Quaker principles, others saying Kristol deserved it. Overall, the kids at Earlham are a pretty liberal bunch. The student who threw the pie has been suspended and is facing expulsion.

dke, there's actually been a whole string of incidents on college campuses and elsewhere of conservatives getting pies thrown at them while speaking

When I first visited Haverford, it really stood out as an unusually friendly campus. (This impression didn't change when I spent two years at its sister school.)

I second the vote for Haverford. Out of the 10 schools I visited over the course of my college search, it had the friendliest combination of students, faculty members, and admissions personnel by far.
