Friends + Health vs. AP classes!

Hi there!
I am currently a junior in high school and taking 4 AP classes. I am doing well in them, but my mom is concerned. She is worried about my sleeping habits. I usually get a lot of sleep, but for the past week, I have only been getting 5-6 hours and not really hanging out with my friends. She is forcing me to drop my AP Gov class. I think it is just taking some time for me to adjust to my classes because last year I only had one AP class (since our school offers 1) but she is refusing to listen to me.
She is telling me that 10 years from now I will not care how many AP classes I took, but I will definitely care about the relationships I established and my health. I understand her viewpoint, but I am not sure what I want to do.
Thanks for reading this long post,

Listen to your mom. Drop the class. Enjoy high school.

To be honest, I’d stick with it. There’s no point in dropping the class unless you want to.

I would say to stick it out. If YOU think you can handle it, you WILL handle it. Besides, the worst week back is always the worst/most stressful because all the teachers are on the same schedule and have tests all around the same few days. Once teachers go faster/slower, it will be less hectic.

i usually sleep 8 hours too, but this past week I’ve been lucky to get 6! but it’s only temporary, so I’m sticking it out until the weekend :)

There is NO way that I’d drop the class, unless I honestly felt like it was going to make me physically ill because of lack of sleep throughout the year and ruin my life. Lol. Or I guess if I just hated the class ;]
But really, you’ll soon find a way to balance your AP classes and friends+health, because everyone [well mostly everyone] can and does. I’ll have 6 APs this year, but it’s really not too big a deal - you just need to prioritize your activites. If you really feel like you need to take a mental health day - do it! I do all the time :] Lol. Some nights when I’m loaded down with work, but I’m really just feeling out of it or just not up to working all day long, I’ll STILL go out with friends and just shove the homework till some other time. BUT don’t stay up so late every night. You most likely have a lot of time during class/between classes/whenever to be working on hw, just like me. I only really do my Calc and Latin work outside of school - for everything else, I just find the time during school.

LISTEN To your mother unlike everyone is saying on here.

My goodness live your life, you’re only in high school once. You’ll be fine, drop the AP Gov class.

I really believe you can balance your social life and academics if you organize your life more carefully. If you drop your AP class, you will probably regret it; if you stop hanging out with your friends, you will regret that as well.

I don’t go to your school, so I probably can’t say this since all schools are different, but try to finish your homework in class. When you squeeze out every free minute, you could probably have 40 minutes of free time in school.

Also, how does your AP Gov. class work at your school? Our school only offers it for the second semester, and we are doing economics currently.

Finish what you start brah.

Friends & health > AP classes, but think about if it’s necessary to sacrifice the former for the latter. Couldn’t you hang out with friends on weekends? Do some homework in school so you can sleep more? Acquire more efficient work habits? Check out Cal Newport’s Study Hacks blog (Google “Study Hacks” and it should come up). He has some useful tips for making the most of your time.

Or you can just pass your AP classes without studying using secret techniques known only to me…

Namely using the genious websites out there that make junior year a breeze.

Drop the class.

My English teacher assigns tests and essays that make me cry at night.

Isn’t junior year a blast?

You already have four AP classes. Dropping one would not kill you or your chances. Trust me, if you’re already struggling, it doesn’t get any easier.

As somebody who chose the AP classes over friends, I am BEGGING you to choose your friends. Next year, you’ll look back and realize what a huge mistake you made if you chose the AP classes over your friends.

First thought: Honey, by senior year, 5-6 hours of sleep is going to be a luxury.

Useful thought: First, check with your counselor to make sure that this won’t affect how the school reports your course load (some schools have idiotic requirements where if you don’t take one class, they drop you down a whole level of difficulty when they report you to colleges). I’ll bet that 3 APs versus 4 won’t affect that, though, and if I’m right, then drop the class and get a life. If your school IS idiotic with its requirements and I’m wrong, then talk it out with your parents and your guidance counselor. I’m surprised you aren’t past your add/drop classes date yet.

I think you should drop the class because 4 AP Classes in junior year is way too overwhelming. I think what your mother saying is right. You have to be able to balance AP classes with your health and friends. I only took two AP Classes my junior year and joined the Women’s Varsity Tennis and it was extremely hard for me to balance it off with all my classes even though it was ONLY Two. 3 AP Classes is already enough, well it’s your choice to drop it or not. I would definitely say yes, because if you have four AP Classes, you have absolutely no free time with friends or going out. It’s just going to be you and your books and by the way you still have senior year to take AP Classes.
GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING! HOPE YOU MADE THE RIGHT
DECISION!! ;)

Here’s my take on it:

You should learn how to balance academics and other stuff. This year has been relatively difficult for me because I have not been asked to do so so intensely before (Junior w/ 6 AP and a good amount of EC’s). This is good practice for the future, I think. So.. in my opinion, stick it out. 5-6 hours of sleep is little, true. I think maybe there’s something you can fix. For just 4 AP, 5-6 hours of sleep is very little. Try getting stuff done ahead of time. Or working without distractions. It’s a valuable skill to have and I’m learning it the hard way this year. Hang in there and learn this lesson with me.

And just something I noticed.

Senior APs for apps. are hardly relevant.
