I have recently moved to NYC from London because of the family and want to start college in September 2016.
I have GCSEs and I also have 4 A-levels, A-levels are the American equivalent of AP’s in that they are done in the last two years and are needed to get into university, except I think that the A-levels are a lot harder than the AP’s so there would be no reason for American colleges to disregard them.
Go to the Education USA website to understand the process. This fall, students will be and have been applying for acceptance to schools throughout the US for Fall, 2016 admission.
There should be a counselor in your high school, who can help you learn the process. Seek him/her out. As you seem to be a person of means, you might also investigate whether to hire a private college advisor.
If OP has done A levels he or she is finished with high school and currently taking a year out, so no access to counselors etc.
I suspect you will still be regarded as an international student for admissions, which will limit what financial aid you can expect, so what can you pay for college? Do you want to stay in the NY area? What A level grades, and what subjects? What other interests and extra curricular activities have you done in the past, and now? (These may impact on admission chances.)
What subject do you want to major in? One difference you’ll find compared with what your peers in the UK were looking at in university searches is that your major will form only part of your course of study; you will also need to takes classes in unrelated subjects (“general education” requirements).
Are you a British citizen (= international) or are you an American citizen who was raised abroad?
Are you currently enrolled in a NYC high school?
Both are very important because your status will determine what financial aid you’re eligible for, what pool of applicants you’re in, etc.
