Frustrated at not getting jobs in campus

*age might be a problem

F-1 students can’t work off campus…:frowning:

Yes, I was wondering about that.

During your interviews, I would say something like “as a foreign student, I can’t work off campus, so I’m doubly motivated to do a good job as [dishwasher/server/whatever]” That way, you’re appealing to the hiring person’s humanity and telling him/her that you’d be a good worker.

Well, at least you are only restricted to on-campus the first year – sounds like you can petition for off-campus work after that.

@intparent no we can’t. F1(it’s a student visa)students are NOT allowed to work off campus( doesn’t matter whether you are freshmen or not) unless you face an unexpected hardship…which I don’t have and don’t want to get.

Agree that you need to demonstrate financial hardship to do so, and they have to approve it.

@intparent Also, this financial hardship is not simply having little money…it has to do with sudden collapse in home country’s currency or significant increase of school’s tuition and stuff. Fortunately I got tuition scholarship so recent 5% increase in UA tuition shouldn’t bother me…

Whast is your class level? On campus employment was easy to find in CC, but at Uni nobody would call me back. Eventually I figured out it had to do with me being a Trensfer. In order to apply for jobs on campus, you must use the campus job portal. It’s against university policy to hire student employees from outside that source. You don’t get an account on the portal until a while after orientation. Transfer orientation starts a month after Freshman orientation, so Freshmen get their account a month early. A lot of on campus jobs hire pretty quickly after the Freshman accounts open, and when Transfer accounts open a ton of positions are already filled.

Are you a Transfer, too? Or a Spring admit (Hiring is commonly for an academic year and done in Fall)? That could make a big difference.

Do you need to work on campus? When I ran into my roadblock, I looked off campus, and ended up making better money than I would on campus, with a 20% employee discount on things I like to buy, such as alcohol, useful bath and kitchen supplies, and imported foodstuffs (lots of good spices, sauces, and mixes for my cooking). I’m not even upset about getting edged out of on campus employment anymore.

EDIT: Didn’t realize you were F1.
