I’m a very cynical person. I find it hard to believe that they are doing this for the benefit of the students. I think they are preparing for too many enrollments or they may have admitted too many kids and they are looking for an outlet. If I am wrong, then good for FSU.
Sounds like they got a lot of qualified applicants and want to keep some of the high stats kids on reserve for next year.
Good way to build a pipeline of really good students, and takes a lot of work off admissions for next year knowing that they have plenty of quality applicants lined up already.
Actually FSU is really proud of their gap years. Like the email mentioned, very few universities offer money for you to not come to their school for a year and instead study abroad/have an internship. Students who take gap years typically have a better idea of what they want out of college and perform better. This is a program that’s held very near and dear to the CRE, but it’s hard to get information out about it because you can only take a gap year between your high school and freshman year
My son received this email, as well. my experience has been that FSU does many things different from other schools, in a good way. Such as releasing all early admit decisions on schedule, w the merit aid shown right on the portal, on one pre determined day. Many of the schools do waves, leaving everybody in suspense. My daughter ( a sophomore) says that FSU honors program people truly believe in the value of a gap year, that it goes with their vision of a continually improving university.
My reading is that accepting a grant commits a gap year fellow into actually attending fsu, which makes good business sense, as well. i wonder whether many gapers don’t end up attending the school they are originally accepted to, plans can change during a gap year, but not if you have already committed the fsu and accepted their funding.
