is the Auburn NMF package automatic or competitive?

It is now competitive for OOS students

**Auburn’s National Scholars Presidential Scholarships are limited and awarded competitively for non-residents.

*

It doesn’t cover all of OOS tuition anymore.

* [Tuition:] $60,000 over four years for non-residents ($15,000 per year)*

So, that leaves about $6k per year for tuition.

It also doesn’t cover all the costs for the Honors Super Suites housing.

This is great info to recieve as my son just received Semifinalist status so thank you to all who post. I have not heard from anyone on the University of Houston and they have contacted us regarding their full ride scholarship. Does anyone know much about their school and programs?

I just received a packet from Houston yesterday. It doesn’t give any details, but it said “all expenses” so I’m guessing it’s close to a full ride. I’d contact the school and find out.

Just visited Drexel today. They are not an official scholarship sponsor but give 4 years free tuition to any nat. merit finalist.

How many of these DON’T require the NMF to designate the school as their first choice in order to get the scholarship?

*How many of these DON’T require the NMF to designate the school as their first choice in order to get the scholarship? *

Why do you have an issue with designating a first choice?

If it’s because you’re not sure which school to choose, there are schools that don’t require you to choose them until May 1st…which is plenty of time if you’re unsure at this point (which many are).

You can apply to Bama and then you’d be told that you’ll get the scholarship when you are named a NMF and name Bama as your first choice by May 1st…which is done by faxing the form to NMCorp.

Only a small minority of schools require the student to name the school as their first choice prior to April 30 or May 1, at which point all your information is hopefully in, and you can name the school that you are choosing to attend. You can remain undecided until that time. The “trick” is making sure you understand from each school what it is they will give you if/when you name them your first choice. Make sure you know what is guaranteed.

Indecision was my main concern there. Thanks for the help and for reading my mind! :P

We’re parents, that’s what we do.

;)

I just found out that my score qualifies me for NMSF! I’m an AL homeschool student with a good resume starting to think about where I want to go. Free rides are enticing, so I’m mainly considering U of A and Auburn (UAB is my 3rd choice).

I know I have a year to decide, but which should I pick? (They require me to name them as my first choice, or NO FREE MONEY). Pros and cons, like which is better financially, will go into my decision. I’ve visited all of the above colleges already, although we didn’t see much U of A (it was raining).

Any advice from all-knowing parents?

@faustia - I’m concerned that you just found out about being a NMSF. There were deadlines to respond to a couple of months back.

I believe, Faustia is a junior graduating with the class of 2013. He will make NMSF if the cutoff in Alabama is 213 or less, next year (as it usually is).

congrats faustia on doing well on the PSAT. I have a son who took the PSAT this year too. We are waiting for his scores. However, it is unlikely he will make NMSF since the cut off in TX is around 219.

^ ah yes, I missed the “year to decide”.

I found this site to be helpful when looking at merit possibilities for my NMSF son. Not all of it is tied to NMF status, but it is still a good list to get started on your search.

Thanks!

I’m just assuming NMSF status, nothing official. My score (213) is higher than the highest AL cutoff in history, and I’m in the 99th percentile, so I’m fairly sure…

I also had no asterisk by my section index thing on the score report. So . . . good, I guess?

Congrats…

NONE of those schools require you to name that as “first pick” at this point. You don’t have to name one as “first pick” until MAY 1 of your SENIOR year!!!

Right now, your pick can be undecided or whatever! Those schools will not expect you to name a first pick now. ** NO SCHOOL requires you to name a first pick this early…NONE!!!**

* My score (213) is higher than the highest AL cutoff in history, and I’m in the 99th percentile, so I’m fairly sure…

*

Yep! highest AL cutoff has been is 212.

Anyway…you do not have to name Bama, AU, or UAB now. You have more than a year to decide your first pick. Visit Bama with a specialized honors tour, you’ll love it. :)

What is your intended major?

I’m mostly a lurker, but I have to ask mom2collegekids: are you employed by Alabama? I’ve noticed that you push that school quite a bit on the boards here, so I’m just curious.

And Faustia - congratulations!

Regarding UH:
[National Merit Scholarship](National Merit Scholarship - University of Houston)

Houston is a pretty good school. That’s a bargain worth considering.

@mom2collegekids

I realize that; I’m just trying to see if I can make some hard decisions early so I won’t be stressing out next year!

I took a regular tour, not an Honors one. Will do next year!

Intended major: microbiology/premed/neuroscience. I don’t know yet…
