We're going to have our 12yo son in tow while touring University of Rochester with our rising senior this summer. We'll have about an hour to kill on campus while our older son has an admission interview. Is there something cool to check out or do on or near campus? I know most schools have some lesser known exhibits in their academic hallways, like strobe photography or rocks and minerals, fossils, optical illusions, robots, etc. Anything like that on campus? Or a suggestion for an off-campus activity nearby? He's a STEM-leaning kid so the art museum is of less interest.

Thanks!

Can’t really think of anything for a kid. There are some hallway exhibits but I don’t think there’s really much that would appeal, not for an hour.

You could consider the Strong Museum of Play. It’s 10 minutes away at most - Wilson Blvd to Mt. Hope, right on Alexander, left on Monroe and go a few blocks. I’ve never been there but people, including my kid, tell me it’s cool.

Nearer to downtown than campus, but only 2 miles from campus and near the Strong Museum of Play

[Rochester Museum & Science Center-Rochester, NY](http://www.rmsc.org)

Hands-on, interactive, with always changing exhibits. Air conditioned! D2 used to take her middle school age mentee here whenever she got a chance. She highly recommended it even for adults.

~~

And for momentary entertainment on campus–try the library. There’s some cool medieval armor and stuff in one of the upper floor reading rooms. Plus windows that overlook the quad. D2 used to like to study up there.

Looking for dead stuff and frogs and the like along the Genesee might work for a 12 year old boy–so long as you don’t mind his shoes getting muddy. There’s public outdoor pool and kayak/canoe rentals across the river, south of campus at the Genesee Valley Park Rec Center.

I’ve looked at both of those, but they both seem like they’d both be more fitting for a longer visit, and a bit pricey for just an hour.

Any thoughts on Clubhouse Fun Center? They appear to have mini golf, go carts and an arcade.
