While my S is only a freshman at Brown, I grew up in RI and continue to visit relatives/friends in the state. Here are some of my suggestions: Federal Hill, the Italian section of town, has some great eateries and coffee shops on the main drag of that section of town, Atwells Avenue. It also has some of the best pizza – Caserta’s for traditional style; Bob & Timmy’s Grilled Pizza on Spruce for a more upscale pie. There are also great restaurants for breakfast w/ a very cool vibe on Broadway, a few streets away.

Another fun area to window shop and eat is Wickenden Street. It’s walkable from brown. In addition to restaurants/cafes, you’ll find a lot of vintage furniture/clothing shops.

RISD’s Museum of Art is just down the hill on Benefit Street, a few blocks from Brown. It has a terrific collection. You should also check out the List Art Center at brown.

RI has a wonderful zoo in Roger William’s Park. You’ll need to either drive or take a bus to reach it.

For a fun movie night, head to the Cable Car Cinema & Cafe on South Main Street, down the hill from brown. It plays indie films that you’ll watch sitting on a sofa. great atmosphere.

Echo the above.
RISD art museum is an undiscovered treasure, and free to Brown students. (and don’t miss the gift shop).

Add: (esp if you don’t come from part of the country with “city old mansions”) : just walking around College Hill, esp early evening when rooms are lit up and you get a “peak” inside, on Benefit St. or day time up near the Roger Williams memorial for a great view of the city from the top of the hill.

And of course if it is going on when you are in town, don’t miss WaterFire.
