Maybe I can get some insight here. I've been admitted to SAIS (no funding), GW (no funding), and Maryland MPP (approx 75% funding).

Are the two prestigious universities with recognition worth the $50k a year in loans vs the $4-8k I would be paying for Maryland?

Also, how important is it to "diversify" your resume - as in, is it "okay" to go to the same school for undergrad and masters? Or does it look like you got nothing better?

Thank you.

Sorta in the same boat, just on the other coast in LA. I am torn between a cheap public MPA program and highly ranked yet expensive choices. Argh. I went to a small public school for my BA so I am tempted to spring for one of the “better” schools, but the costs are just staggering.

For your situation I would take a hard look at Maryland. It’s a top 25 public affairs program so you are not giving up a whole lot in terms of prestige, just a lot of extra loans. It may not be in DC like GW is but its still close enough. Plus, when you graduate you won’t be under as much pressure to immediately find a quality gig because you would be better off financially.

But hey, it’s a tough decision. At least you are in the happy predicament of choosing between three fine schools. Best of luck!
