I have a really weird set of stats that seems to contradict themselves a whole bunch.

Asian male
texas (houston)
high middle class (230K)
top 100 high school, so rank is quite..... eh.
3.75 GPA (weighted, i believe)
2080 SAT (610CR, 680M, 740W)
750 SAT 2 USHist
ACT-32

ECs
required Community service by school, so 100+ hours at least
most of it spent at hospital in histology lab

i dont really remember what classes i took each year, but i'll try and make a summary
freshman- no ap/pap, but 1 year ahead of TEAS (not that it means much), intro to HST
sophomore- pap chem, alg 2 (same 1 yr ahead) HST I
junior- precal, APUSH (4 AP), APEC (3 AP), HST II
senior- this is where it gets fun
AP bio
Ap Macroeconomics
Ap government
AP Cal AB
AP Chem
AP lit
yearbook
HST III (essentially biomed engineering and anatomy)

anyway, here's my working list in no particular order
Macalester
Rice
UT Austin
Texas A&M (yeah both UT and A&M)
Lehigh
Lewis and Clark
RIT
Beloit (nursing @ rush in case the economy goes to all hell)
SUNY Geneseo
CUNY of some kind
DePaul

Now..... what to major in.....
I don't really have an idea of what to major in, but i've had this ability thats kind of bugged me for a while that basically lets me major in anything. Given 1 hour, i can become relatively knowledgable in any given area. Like really knowledgable. I'm choosing between engineering (automotive), journalism, and nursing, but really any major will work. Those are just my preferences as of now.

Bonus points if you can tell me what HS i go to.

i think you have a darn good chance at any of those schools.

however, i fail to see what is so "funky" about your stats. and i don't care what hs you go to. i think your stats will get you into most of the schools on your list.

truth to be told, i didn't even realize that there were such well-known high schools. i didn't think it mattered what HS you went to. And now I know that there are like NATIONALLY known schools. ***? to me, all that maters is how you do compared to the rest of the people in your school. it shouldn't matter how your school is compared to the rest of the country because there are really stupid and really smart people at every school. just because someone goes to the number 1 hs in the country doesn't mean he is smarter than soemone who goes to a no-name school.

i wonder how well-known my school is. anyone know where i can find out?

US news and world report has a list, as does newsweek.

both methodologies flawed in some way.

guess the high school is just a game i like to play, kinda like giving people my stats and having them try to guess my match-reach-safety configuration.

I would say you could get into everything except Rice, with a small chance you won't get into Lehigh. Out of state schools have weird standards so you really need much higher scores than others who are from PA and the east coast. I'd chance you around 20% for Rice because you have pretty low test scores for them, but you didn't take your senior year off like most people do and you are from Houston. I had a 1590 on my SAT, played a varsity sport, was in the top state orchestra, had 300+ community service hours and was a president/vice president of 8 clubs (one that I started) and I didn't get into Rice - so they're very picky and overly selective, if I do say so myself.

For those two, I would recommend going to whatever they hold in your area in terms of recruiting (they both did seminars in Dallas when I was looking) and do an interview. Send followups on whatever you're doing if you're serious about them. Are you top 7% of your class? You wouldn't even have to worry about UT then and honestly you could probably get a full ride to UT - I've known less impressive resume-holders who have gotten it.

I was also under the impression TCU had one of the best nursing schools in the country, why aren't you looking there? Purdue is a great engineering school you might want to consider. Also, if you start engineering, it's typically easy to switch later if you change your mind and still graduate in 4, whereas if you switch TO engineering after your first year, you're basically guaranteed to be there 5 or more. Good luck.

thanks for the advice.
I don't consider TCU because i want to get as far away from tx as possible (the weather......)
i'm pretty sure i'm not gonna get into rice, but our school basically forces us to apply to them anyway.

Given an hour, you can become really knowledgeable in any given area, yet you can't "remember" what classes you took each year? Before filling out your applications, it would be a good idea to spend "an hour" going over your transcript.

Ahhh... more of a "prefer not to mention" than can't actually remember. Looks like senior year will be well above the minimum, though. The only place your record is unremarkable is on cc.

I like the idea of a school that forces you to apply to college. My school did not seem to care at all if we went to college. (I wonder if there is a "bottom 100" list my hs appears on.)

according to newsweek, my school is number 1251. haha. i'll take pride knowing that my school is the most expensive public secondary school top build in the US, even if it isn't the best.

for choosing where to apply, look at all the schools and see which ones have strong programs for your areas of interest. since you aren't sure exactly what you want to study, see if there's one that has good programs for everything!

I'm a sophomore so, don't trust me on these chances, but I have a question. What is with y'alls health science tech program? I live in Austin, tx and in our health science tech program we get become CNA's our junior year and then a pharmacy tech our senior year (both certified) and our fish year we do medical terminology o.0.

When I read your post I thought I knew what high school you went to, but then I read the top part and it said Houston :(. I was going to guess either Westwood high school or Mcneil high school, but they're both in austin.

I can't give you an accurate chance since we don't know what your gpa is on the 4.0 scale

Rice - reach (cause of your gpa)
UT Austin - high match/low reach (it's been getting a lot harder to get into UT austin)
Texas A&M (yeah both UT and A&M) Safety
SUNY Geneseo - High reach (they place a huge emphasis on GPA)

1251? theres, what? 27k high schools in the us? 1251's not too bad, even if your school's only distinction is the most expensive public secondary school top build in the US. I thought publics were supposed to be free? or free to the end-user.

we don't actually get an certs from out program, which is just down right depressing. We get enough training to be an associates degree nurse, i swear.

if you want a hint, we DESTROYED you at HOSA last year.

dang. wowzers.
we got offered a prime piece of land in the texas medical center for 1 dollar a year and we turned it down on the grounds that we couldn't afford it. BS, huh?

haha. i remembered vaguely something about how the top 1 percent was people who made over 370 something k a year. The curve for income isn't linear, so i figured, high, if not really really really high middle class.

suffice it to say, too much for need based fin aid.
