cormom15–really? That is a fair question given that so many schools are very lopsided in the m/f ratio.

LOL - I was going to say the same thing! I would not have wanted to go to a school where the ratio was way off.

That was the only question that she asked on a college tour - ever! It was cute the way she asked it though because it was as if nothing else mattered, just that! Everyone was asking very specific detailed questions about the school and she came up with that! The ratio wasn’t that far off either. She ended up at a school with a 60/40 split in her favor however!

LOL - OK! I get it in context! Glad she got her preference! :)

cormom15–I thought you were the TOUR GUIDE and said that–ok, as a parent, I wouldn’t be happy if that was the only question she asked, ever :D.

In reference to the original post, sometimes the colleges that are the quietest on Sunday morning are the most fun on Saturday night. However, that would not apply to Swarthmore.

Daughter and I were touring a college when the tour guide noted that every February they present the Vagina Monologues. At which point one of the girls on the tour yells out “did she just say vagina?” about 5 times. We looked at each other and both thought this girl needed to apply to the school across the river.

We had an earlyish Saturday tour at one school, 9:30. The kids commented how no one was around. I suggested they were probably sleeping. They kept commenting about how quiet it was until I pointed out that had they not been on this tour they would have been home sleeping too. After about 11:00 the campus was very busy.

We visited one school during the summer. Everything about it seemed nice. On the way home S1 said he could never go there because it was too hot…the school was only 90 minutes from home. Could it really have been that much warmer than home? I think not.

I did point out (at Swarthmore) the nicely piled up beer cans near the dorms, providing ample evidence that the campus probably wasn’t “dead” and that the four kids heading the dining halls were probably the only ones without a hangover. He thought it was funny but was unmoved since he doesn’t drink.

I thought the campus was beautiful, if very quiet.

SteveMA - too funny!

Here is the original thread…it’s a classic!!!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/705291-stupidest-reason-child-wont-look-college.html

btw, in the above thread my all time favorite is post #684 where Lafalum84 takes the collective ‘reasons’ and makes a singular plea to the colleges of what they can do to improve their chances with our kids. It’s a riot!

LOLROF!!! That’s AWESOME!!!

I always find it interesting the kinds of things that kids are really interested in and which are deal breakers when it comes to their college experience! Too funny.

What is does reflect is our kids are all looking for different things, imagine that! I know some people are exceptionally bothered by a kid crossing off a college because of somewhat insignificant reasons. The way I see it the list has to be culled somehow, they can only go to one. Usually when they are giving you a silly reason there is a feeling that something is just not right that they can’t quite put their finger on or articulate. Now, I can sit my kid down and try to analyze it, painfully, or I can just accept that he’s ready to move on to another possibility.

If it comes down to applications and a match or safety needs to be added and I really felt that the academic offerings at a school that was axed due to the ‘ratio of sundresses to skinny jeans’ was worth consideration then I might open that up for discussion (the school, not the skinny jeans). The choice would be his, but after some distance and looking again at what his opportunities might be in comparison with what his final list has shaped up as he may very well be willing to add the school and apply.

You gotta love that lafalum84 post. So incredibly funny!

Tufts was about the 4th or 5th school we visited.

We had time before the info session and tour so we took a walk around campus. As we came around one building to a nice grassy area, my daughter ran ahead about 10 feet, turned around and started walking backwards, waved her hand at the quad and said:

“On a sunny day, you will find many students sitting here studying… or perhaps playing Frisbee…”

We did hear that - almost verbatim - in many places!

LOL - witty kid ya got there, OneAndDone!

When we visited Harvard, I pointed out to S all the “preppy” kids with their dockers and colored shorts, etc. We laughed because you could totally pick out the kids that went there, and the ones that definitely fit in! It really turned S off though - I think he was afraid he’d have to dress that way!

We visited a college were the tour guide ( a young woman ) told us that the food was so good there that she gained 30 lbs ! It wasn’t a good selling point for my daughter , but I don’t think that was entirely the reason why she scratched that school off her list ;)

My son immediately nixed Amherst when he realized there was no campus bookstore or big student union. It looks like a lovely NE prep school and it was that visit that made him rethink and decide he wanted a university not LAC.
