<p>I'm not yet convinced about the letter, but such an SAT score is definitely possible even with those grades/rank. Grades and rank measure your work ethic, not intelligence.</p>

<p>Could be the child is brilliant & bored at school; like the OP said, great slacker. Don't know that scores on the SAT are necessarily due to effort--some kids test really well & don't put in much effort while others work really hard but don't score very well.
There definitely is a mismatch between grades & test scores for the Princeton rejectee.</p>
<p>Well, I'm not sure that my brother was 'brilliant' but he was very bright in high school. He didn't study for the SAT, but still did fine - it's not like it measures what you learn in the classroom or anything.</p>
