Furman vs. Southern Methodist University?

I'm a senior and have recently been accepted to both schools. I applied early decision to furman and have to tell them by january 15th if I want to attend. I'm looking to major in journalism and am very interested in pre-law.

Can any alumni/parents/current students give me some insight on the differences and pros and cons of each school? I'm really interested in both, and I'd like to hear more from people who have actually attended the schools, and what opportunities there are at each.

I dont know much about SMU but I know alot about FU.

If you want to be a lawyer FU is a great place. All the students I know at FU have been accepted to very good law schools. FU is one of the top feeder schools to law schools.

I know you dont have much time but I would try to visit to see the school and talk to folks. This is the best way.

But, I can tell you that you cant go wrong choosing Furman. Its a very good school

Very very similar culture at both schools. Recommend both of them. But they are both prep city and rich kids.

Depends on what part of the country you live in and where you want to go to school.

Congratulations. My D1 has friends at Furman now.

I would pick Furman unless you are set on living in Dallas.

Thank you all for your replies! I actually did visit recently, it’s beautiful at Furman, it seems like it could really be a “home away from home”. I’ve never been to Dallas, or Texas at all, but I plan to visit next month.
And I’m from Florida, so SMU is definately further than Furman, but not horribly so, I’d say.

My impression is that SMU is a conduit from HS to the Dallas business community, so if you have ultimate plans to be employed in Dallas, that could be helpful. But I’m a big Furman fan (and that’s saying something, since I went to Wake Forest). I’ve never met a Furman student or grad who wasn’t passionate about the place. Its quality of life is very, very high. As a LAC, it has > 2500 students, D-1 sports including a strong football program, a good marching band, a highly-regarded School of Music, and an environmental sustainability program housed in a facility built on campus by Southern Living magazine as a model sustainable home - all quite unusual. I’ve got two kids at Harvard and an 11th-grader with similar stats to his sisters, but a desire for a marching band and a less urban, more traditional campus. I keep bugging him to go with me on a campus visit to Furman.
