FUSYE - finland senate youth exchange

anyone else get into this program? i got accepted but didn't get a whole lot of info

You got in? I got put as an alternate. Sorry, not too helpful.

One of my kids did this several years ago and loved it! I sort of recall minimal info as well at first, but it is a great program. Things I can think of that we had to do:

We had to buy a bit of extra insurance (gruesome, but what I remember is that it had to cover repatriating her remains if she died overseas – sending her home).

Getting the phone situation sorted was complicated, and probably would be handled differently now then back then (I think we bought her some kind of phone card, she didn’t have a cell phone while there). She did go to Finland a few years after that for a semester of study abroad, and she took an unlocked cell phone and bought a sim card there, I think.

They started with a few days in DC, then flew to Helsinki and spent a few days there. Then off with their host families for several weeks, and back in Helsinki for a few days at the end.

I think she needed at least one nice outfit (and it obviously had to travel well). One thing they did was go to an event at the Finnish Embassy in DC, and she wore it there. She still owns that dress, and we call in the “embassy dress”. She spoke some Finnish before going, so she got the task of presenting something to the Finnish ambassador. But she didn’t know which person that was, and gave it to the wrong guy… :-O

Congratulations on getting accepted, hope you have a great time!

thanks a lot both of you!
