future doctors beware -\

lol* *.

"^why did you want to become a doctor in the first place if you weren't into science?"

-Eh I'll admit i didn't think about it very hard, but I figured that since I liked helping people and shadowed my dad a few times at the hospital that it might be something to look into. But then I remembered how boring chemistry and biology were to me.

That's why it's good to do more research on these things, unlike me lol.

I've actually read that article not too long ago.

The way I see it, doctors have to go through way too much paperwork and insurance. If a doctor starts his own practice, he has to hire a lot of experienced assistants and secretaries that it's a surprise if they make any money. Only a few doctors actually get the real money from their practices.

On the other hand, my mom's boss started a few companies, manages them well, and makes millions. He always has a genuine smile on his face, which is not exhibited by a lot of doctors.

Go into business.

My dad is an ophthalmologist, and even in the most lucractive fields like ophthalmology its getting harder to make the same amount of money each year..hes having to get more and more efficient and spend far less time with patients..i mean we are still very well off but my dad discourages me from pursuing medicine and i can see firsthand that the future doesnt look too great ;/

Which leaves only 2 fields that are both lucrative and prestigious...but ya it sucks to be a PCP these days (although the anti- private practice propaganda is blown way out of proportion).

Fafgafkmagmbump!

this is still not going to change my mind

What about psychiatrists?

Among our family friends are a number of doctors. All of them make comfortable six figure profits even after malpractice insurance and don't feel burdened by debt. Paying back 20k isn't that bad when you're pulling in 200-300k a year. Some private practice physicians net half a million a year. Of course, this is probably the upper end of the pay spectrum.

I'm not saying there aren't a lot of frustrated doctors, but to make sweeping generalizations like "Most doctors greatly discourage their kids from becoming physicians and most want to change professions themselves" is complete bs.

Every job has its problems and no profession is perfect.

Looking at the arguments they presented, it seems the negatives they are listing are not that bad... At least you don't have to worry about outsourcing, decreased demand, and technology replacing your place in the profession...

If you really want to try it, then its a wonderful job. If you want the money and prestige... then you'll have horrible years trying to go through undergraduate school, med school, residency and so on...

I was talking to a few doctors in Starbucks. Hey, they were in scrubs so I HAD to ask.

When I asked if it was worth all of the schooling - One of them told me to find something else and that he's not sure what will happen with some new med policies.

I find it ironic with Forbes, too. About a year or so ago, they were talking about Surgeons were majorly needed. Hell. it was the featured article. The patient was running. It's somewhere in my Magazine Archive (aka, top shelf of my closet)

OMG this topic is from the summer O_O

it gets brought up now? im so glad

XDD

my parents always say that business related jobs go up and down with economy
lawyers are pretty consistent but all of them go to hell for that (just kidding :P)-- but i can't see myself being the defending lawyer of a person who is accused of rape or murder. i don't think i have the conscious to do that especially if there is evidence against the guy and i have to manipulate it somehow.

my parents say that jobs in the medical field and science field are always sought out so no matter what, go for it. and i kinda have to agree now with this bailout plans and this ruined economy

Practice just seems too boring with all the exciting research breakthroughs occurring every day.

I've talked about this with a random stranger at library. He said pretty much the same thing with more context. He concluded with Doctors=scum
I thiink I would be one anyway. I don't think I can be off the streets otherwise.

Ugh.

You know, negative stuff like this has ALWAYS been there regarding doctors and medical education.
But, I still want to grow up and go to med school.(If I get accepted.)
I guess, it's like, if you REALLY have the passion and compassion the profession needs, then I don't think anything (haha, except maybe money) can stop you.

Screw that. I still plan on studying pediatric neurology. It's what I love. What's life if you don't do what you love?
