GA Tech, U of Rochester or Rensselaer

For DS to major in Computer Science. Some interest in music as well which gives points to U of Rochester. Some scholarship help from Rochester and Rensselaer. DS is not interested in football and fraternities. Thanks.

Was hoping to get some comments/comparisons of these three schools. Thanks.

Are you from VA? The winters at U of Roch and RPI will be much harsher than VA winters, and Spring comes much later.

Georgia Tech has one of the best Comp Sci programs in the country, much better than RPI or U of R. I guess it depends on how serious your daughter is about music. All three are great schools.

I have heard that Georgia Tech is not much fun, but comp sci is a pretty hard major everywhere.

Congrats to your daughter.

The concerns about weather are absolutely on the mark. However, UofR is the most well-rounded school of the three besides having an amazing CompSci department that produced some pretty big names in Comp Sci. In addition to the Eastman School, it has very good PoliSci, Pysch, Optics and Physics departments in addition to a terrific medical school.
If it is pure engineering your DS is interested in (MechE or CivE and others) Georgia Tech or RPI would be better. Congratulations and good luck!

Does your son have any interests other than engineering? Does he want to be surrounded by engineers and science types most of the time, or would he prefer there to be English majors, poli sci majors, history majors, psych majors, film majors, too? If he wants a broader community, UofR can’t be beat.

I daresay the male:female ratio is probably less lopsided at UofR as well (it’s 50-50).

Kids at UR do not have to be at Eastman to take advantage of the music scene. The river campus has its own ensembles, and members of these ensembles take private lessons at the Eastman school for free. Great perk, after paying for years of lessons!!
