I hate final fantasy. If you like halo and COD then we're still cool.

Nooo... we're already set up for a rivalry here. FF fangirl But yeah, I'll definitely be contributing to the gamer culture, at least in terms of FF, GH, WoW, and whatever else people care to get me addicted on.

I'm not really big into FF but I did like some of square's super nintendo games (see: Chrono Trigger). I'd probably like FF more if I owned a playstation since 7 seems to be everybody's favorite game ever.

FF sucks, CoD is the best, FPS is the best, RTS is good too.

I've had a PS since I was 8, and I never liked any FF game. I suggest anyone with a brain (aka any gamer joining me at Cambridge this fall) get the MGS three-pack. You get the EXPANSION versions (aka with vr missions and specials) of MGS1, 2, and 3 for only THIRTY dollars (at gamestop only I think, although don't quote me on that).

(The only problem is that you cant play mgs1 on the ps3 and save too)

I'm currently trying to give up the ever addicting WoW. I hope no one plays that at Harvard, because if I get accepted it would be hard for me to stay away from World of Warcraft again.

ooo diablo LOD.... why art thou not upgrading to diablo 3... lmao

man its all about the FPS now...

edit: ignore this paragraph. I was going to get into why Splinter Cell is better than MGS but don't want to start a flame war ;)

I played warcraft (non-"world of" edition) a lot more than diablo, but that just me.

With all the incredible extracurricular, social, and research activities at Harvard, perhaps you should be considering "real life" experiences. You will have amazing classmates to meet, mingle and grow with, probably best done face to face rather than in cybergames.

Halo and SSB here... though I unfortunately don't have either =( Fortunately, I've picked them up quickly, seeing as they haven't changed excessively from their predecessors.

Oh, and Starcraft and Counterstrike yay!

Indeed there's much to do on campus... but you cast the two as a dichotomy, as if you cannot game and have a "real life" as well. Last time I checked, gaming happens within the confines of this "life" thing of which you speak :P (And many games are good for socializing around and with)

lol, y'all are some hardcore gamers. Only wii tennis for me, even though it's not online multiplayer :)

I've played all the splinter cell games and they're nothing compared to the MGS series. Sure you get to walk around at 2 mph for the duration, but the overall gaming experience is garbage.

@ fauve: stop being so ignant.

Ignant? Communication skills might need a bit of polishing before those fall classes.

He was obviously joking.

And how did I know he/she/it would take it seriously.....

ahahahaha good one piccolo

Forget wow and halo... Starcraft 2 is coming out next year. I need to work on my 200 actions per minute. No seriously, battle.net (wc3,sc1,diablo) has more people than Xbox live.

Until then, DotA is where it is at.
Lich King be damned!

Sorry for bringing it up, PJ! I've only played the first MGS and two SC games so I'm really in no position to talk. Moving on...

Fauve, it's like asking if I should give up books and film for "real life" experiences as well. Video games are quickly evolving as a medium, and have long ago surpassed the point of being just toys or diversions. Check this out:

The Harvard Crimson :: News :: A Major In Mario Kart

"Decker’s concentration in “ludology”—the study of video games from both a technological and humanities perspective—encompasses several academic areas. He plans to take classes in psychology, economics, computer science, and media studies, cross-enrolling at MIT for the media studies courses."

"Mark C. Szigety, a doctoral candidate at the Harvard Business School, is teaching a section of the Economics 970 sophomore tutorial titled “Child’s Play No Longer: The Grown-Up Economics of Video Games.” "

" the University of California-Santa Cruz took the academic study of video games one step further by making it an official major in 2006. "

"Decker recently founded the Harvard Interactive Media Group with the assistance of Alice J. Robison, a visiting scholar at MIT. Decker said that the organization seeks to be a recreational and academic presence on campus for students interested in interactive media. "

We could always duke out SC v. MGS for laughs on AIM (do I even have yours?), but great post (more than neutralized fauve's ignance :D ) and, oh yeah, 7 hours and 13 minutes until part 4!
