Gap year and musical theater BFA

A lot of your school directors will tell you that is what they are looking for – “actor” first. One of them (who has been on Broadway himself) who is the director of one of my past kids told me “We can teach the other stuff, but acting is the hard thing to get.” I personally (and this is JUST an opinion of mine!!) think some of it has to do with children’s theatre and kids learning bad habits, like overacting or not being involved in the development of their characters. When I direct, I don’t block on the first rehearsal as happens around here a lot with children’s theatre. I actually teach Meisner exercises and let kids (even as young as 8-10) be involved with their character dev. It is a collaboration and they need to understand that from the beginning. I cannot tell you the kids I have who had come in and expect to be told where to go and what to do during the first rehearsal. Who act only with their voice. That isn’t acting. That is a robot executing a program. I think that is what makes some of this more difficult. To find those who are directable and can learn new methods and have something good to start with.

My student had this change of heart during the audition process last year. It began as straight MT all the way, but some acting redirects (which were not enthusiastically received at the time), which led to an offer and a WL at what we had as reach schools, led to an epiphany that student really wanted to be an actor who can sing with the wider options that led to, not a singer who can act.

Though the reality of having to take 4 years of dance as a MT major might have been another late epiphany! :joy:

i think mine is coming to this as well….the value of acting. sadly she did not get her BU prescreen done in time :frowning:

I’m not too sure about the net calculators tbh, we found BW to be amongst the most generous in terms of merit, they post it very clearly on their website, they also gave 2 additional scholarships to my kid unsolicited after Fr. Year…. So maybe these calculators go on need based on the cost vs your salary & maybe bc BW is generous w both academic and talent $$

I forgot from your initial post if she applied to Pace. They are very generous with merit scholarships and it looks like their deadline is today. They have 4 programs and all have a single application fee

yes BFA acting! And you do have to apply for the music theater concentration in the second year! amazing list of alums from that program!!!
